Displaying Rubric Feedback in Gradebook

Rubrics now have a consistent look and feel, and students will now be able to see their graded rubric feedback for Discussions, Assignments and Quizzes within the Gradebook, as well as the corresponding tool.

What does this change mean?

  • Lecturers can now associate and assess Discussions, Assignments or Quizzes from the corresponding tool, and the completed rubric will be displayed in its entirety in the Gradebook (if activity has a linked grade)
  • Students can now see their full completed rubric (including the selected levels and educator feedback) in more places:
    • Gradebook (new)
    • Discussion (new), Assignment, and Quiz
    • User Progress, including Grades tab (new)

From now on you should associate the rubric with the tool you are grading - and not with the Gradebook. Marking can then be done within the tool, and when published will transfer to the grades (if associated) automatically. Students can then view the Rubric in the tool / and the Gradebook.

Grade Items which are 'independent' and are intended to grade off-line/observational activities can continue to use rubrics. They just cannot be associated with activities (Discussions, Assignments, Quizzes).

For content that currently has a rubric associated with the Grade item and not the activity you will get this message:

Grade editing page message

Figure: A note in the Grade Editing page indicating that while the grade item has a rubric, it cannot also be associated with an online activity

If you get the above message, and grading has not yet commenced - you can remove the rubric from the Grade item, and associate it with the activity ( Discussion, assignment etc.). marking can then be completed within the tool and will be transferred to the Grade item once published.

What about my existing units that have Rubrics directly associated with Grades?

All your units that have Grades associated with Rubrics and Activities will be updated automatically when you copy the unit to a new unit shell. All rubrics that are associated with a linked Grade will be transferred to the linked Activity (Assignment, Discussion, Quiz). However units that have already been created with Rubrics associated in the Grade item and not the activity will get the message above, and should be changed now before semester starts.

Example 1: Discussion "Article Reflection" is linked to Grade "Article Reflection Grade". Both, Discussion and Grade have Rubric "Written Communication" attached. After copy, Discussion "Article Reflection" has Rubric "Written Communication", and Grade has no rubric. Completed "Written Communication" rubric can still be viewed in Gradebook with Grade "Article Reflection Grade".

Example 2: Discussion "Article Reflection" is linked to Grade "Article Reflection Grade". Discussion has Rubric "Written Communication" attached, and Grade has Rubric "Literacy" attached. After copy, Discussion "Article Reflection" has two rubrics: "Written Communication" and "Literacy", and Grade has no rubric. Both rubrics can still be viewed in Gradebook with Grade "Article Reflection Grade".
