Get behind our World T20 star, James Faulkner

James Faulkner holds the record for the fastest century by an Australian batsman in a one-day international and is on the Australian team. He’s also a member of the University of Tasmania cricket club.

Australia’s three-match T20 international series against South Africa starts today. James Faulkner, who holds the record for the fastest century by an Australian batsman in a one-day international is on the Australian team. He’s also a member of the University of Tasmania cricket club.

Cricket Australia said that Faulkner “is arguably one of the most exciting prospects in Australian cricket”, noting that he has been Australia’s lynch pin on the one-day side during the past two years, the ‘Finisher’, and that the pitches on the sub-continent will suit him.

We’re excited to watch James play a major part in the ICC world T20 Trophy.

University of Tasmania Cricket Club President, Paul McNamara, said that Faulkner is a shining example of what the University of Tasmania cricket club is all about, saying the club is about opportunity and excellence, with a focus on pathways for young players.

Our job is to spot, support and develop talent and we’re always looking for new players.

“A strong point of difference for the University of Tasmania Cricket Club is that we encourage and facilitate young players to play with the adult team.

From 14 years old young players have the opportunity to play with international athletes, like James Faulkner, every weekend.

“Cricket is a skills based game, its nothing to do with age, and you have to play cricket to learn cricket. So playing competitive cricket with serious players is an incredible opportunity.”

The Club is also home to Ben Hilfenhaus and Tim Paine. Hilfenhaus made his international cricket debut in a T20 match against England and was named Bradman Young Cricketer of the Year. He was ranked the No.6 Test bowler in the world in 2011-12. Paine received a rookie contract with Tasmania at age 16, the youngest player ever to do so, and later in his career was selected in the Australian side.

If you want to play for Australia you have to be playing Premier League Cricket. There is only one league in each state, so in Tasmania with a smaller population there is more opportunity to get into the Premier League and get noticed.

McNamara was quick to reinforce that while the primary objective of the club was excellence in cricket, it is also a wonderful place for men and women of all ages and cricket skill levels to come together for friendship and support.

For those coming from outside of Tasmania in particular, this is a great home for people who have an interest in cricket.

The University of Tasmania Cricket Club has both men’s and women’s teams from ages 5 years and up. It is open to University students and members of the Tasmanian community. They train every Tuesday and Thursday night and weekends between September and March. There is also an annual cricket scholarship available to University of Tasmania students.
