Ms Linda Nichols participates in TV panel show for the Rural Health Education Foundation
Lecturer and PhD candidate at the School of Nursing and Midwifery, Ms Linda Nichols has lent her expertise to an education initiative by the Rural Health Education Foundation, aimed at raising the awareness of stroke prevention in remote communities.
The program titled ‘Beat Stroke: Keep the Pressure Down’ has aired on the Rural Health Channel, a national free-to-air satellite television channel aimed at providing health education to rural and remote health professionals and their communities.
The hour long program investigates stroke as Australia’s second biggest killer after coronary heart disease and features views from some of Australia’s leading health practitioners alongside Ms Nichols.
As a Registered Nurse and Lecturer, Ms Nichols discusses her role in stroke prevention. “From a Primary Health Care Perspective, it’s about getting out there (in the community) and starting primary prevention – that is preventing stroke in the first place” Ms Nichols says.
“And for patients who have had a stroke, it is about making sure they take their medication and change their lifestyle to prevent the risk of having a second stroke.”
The program is available as an education resource on the Rural Health Education Foundation website and can be viewed by the general public and health practitioners. Registered health practitioners also have the opportunity to complete a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) component and receive a certificate of participation for self-reporting of CPD.
