During the month of August, the School of Pharmacy participated in the Shut Your Sash Challenge by switching off fume cupboards and/or shutting their sashes to reduce energy expended from the exhaust.
Four labs from northern and southern campuses competed in the competition and the winners for this challenge were announced on Thursday.
We are delighted to announce Best Performance (at 86%) was taken out by the School of Pharmacy, while Largest Improvement (at 20%) was achieved by the National Centre for Marine Conservation and Resource Sustainability.
Well done to all those research and laboratory staff and students who took notice of the posters and signs, and who made the effort to close the sash on fume hoods to the minimum practical level and to turn them off when they were not in use.
As a result of the Shut Your Sash Challenge 36,000 kWh of energy were saved equating to a cost-saving of $1,300. The practices identified by the audits undertaken during this challenge save an estimated $16,000 annually and are well worth the effort.
The School of Pharmacy and the National Centre for Marine Conservation and Resource Sustainability have both won a major prize of $700 to be spent on sustainability initiatives, and a Fairtrade hamper valued at $150.
