George Taylor awarded Australian Clinical Pharmacy Award 2008
The Australian Clinical Pharmacy Award is annually awarded by Federal Council to a member of The Society of Hospital Pharmacists of Australia (SHPA), in recognition of outstanding contributions in the area of clinical pharmacy practice.
George Taylor was awarded the 2008 Award at the annual SHPA conference on 6 September 2008, an inscribed plaque and a sum of $1000.
Nominations for the award were accepted from Branch Committees and Committees of Specialty Practice. Nominations were also accepted from a group of any five (5) financial members of the Society.
The SHPA Federal Secretariat calls for nominations for the Award each year by advertising in the Bulletin or the Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research and by notifying Branch Committees and Committees of Specialty Practice. The closing date for nominations is 1 July each year. The nominees and nominators must be members of SHPA.
- Nomination Process - Nominations were required to be in writing, addressing the selection criteria outlined below. All nominations included a letter in support of the nomination, the written signed approval of the nominee, a curriculum vitae of the nominee and written signed references from two referees addressing the selection criteria. from two referees.
- Selection Panel - Nominations were considered by a selection panel chaired by the Federal President of the Society. The composition of the selection panel is the Federal President of SHPA; the Chair of the SHPA Division of Education; the Chair of the SHPA Committee of Specialty Practice in Clinical Pharmacy; the Chair of the SHPA Committee of Research and Development Grants Program; and the recipient of the Award from the immediately preceding year.
- Selection Criteria - In determining the recipient of the award, the selection panel gave consideration to the following criteria:* outstanding contribution by an SHPA member in the field of clinical pharmacy practice. Such contribution may be made by academic achievement, professional leadership or national and international activity in clinical pharmacy, service to professional organisations (including SHPA), as well as other extra-mural activities; * outstanding contribution to knowledge relating to clinical pharmacy practice or knowledge of therapeutics through research, clinical teaching, service on expert panels/committees, or publications in peer-reviewed pharmacy/medical/scientific journals.
George has been highly regarded within the Tasmanian pharmacy profession for a considerable time. He was awarded a Teaching Merit Award in 2007 by the Faculty of Health ScienceTeaching and Learning committee and is held in high esteem for his clinical teaching and knowedge by staff of the School of PharmacyUTAS and the Pharmacy Department, RHH.
- Presentation of the Award - The Award was presented at the Federal Conference of SHPA. The presentation of the Award was accompanied by the delivery of an oration by George with subsequent publication of the oration in Journal of Pharmacy Practice and Research.
- Form of the Award - the award symbolises the aims of team treatment, particularly of patients with multiple and/or difficult conditions where doctor, nurse and pharmacist combine to achieve the best outcome. The design shows two hands, those of the doctor and nurse, underlying the patient. The sick patient is shown lacking a crucial element. There is a hand above the patient holding the symbolic treatment for the patient. The hand holding the crucial piece is that of the pharmacist.
