Admission to Candidature

Admission to a Masters program is normally granted on the basis of a Bachelors degree with first or second class Honours.  Admission to PhD candidature is normally granted on the basis of a Bachelor’s degree with first class or second upper division honours (or a Four Year BA), or a Masters degree by research.  Admission is also possible for candidates who lack an Honours degree, but who have some equivalent qualification or experience. In some cases candidates without Honours may be admitted first to a preliminary Masters programme. It is not unusual for candidates to enrol first in a Masters degree with the option of later converting to PhD candidature. Such conversion is based on the completion of at least a year of Master enrolment and satisfactory progress during that year.

Application Procedure

Before applying for candidature prospective students should approach a member of staff who could potentially supervise your graduate project to discuss possible supervision (email correspondence is fine). You should also discuss research opportunities, supervision possibilities and the availability of supporting facilities with the Graduate Research Coordinator: Dr Richard Corry (Hobart). You may also wish to contact Dr James Chase (on the Launceston campus) or the Head of School, Prof Marcelo Stamm (Hobart). If you are interested in pursuing postgraduate study in Gender Studies you should contact the Gender Studies Coordinator, Dr Lucy Tatman (Hobart).
Application forms, and contact details including addresses, can be accessed electronically on the web at www.research.utas.edu.au/gr/prospective/index.htm. The application must be accompanied by a summary of your research proposal of at least 250 words which ideally you will have discussed with a potential supervisor. Once you have made a formal application the Head of School will be asked to advise the Board of Graduate Research of your suitability, the availability of facilities, supervision arrangements and any special conditions that might apply to your project.
If you are an overseas applicant you may access information about the application process on the web at http://www.international.utas.edu.au/static/research.php and may also contact the Office of International Development directly. Before admission to research higher degree candidature, overseas applicants must satisfy the University that they have adequate financial resources to undertake study in Australia.
If you are a candidate at another institution, but wish to transfer your candidature to the School of Philosophy at the University of Tasmania you must first obtain the support of the School and should discuss the issue with the Graduate Research Coordinator and the Head of School.  The School will then discuss transfer arrangements with the Secretary of the Board of Graduate Research, including the granting of appropriate credit for work you have already done.

Scholarships

The University offers a range of scholarships for research higher degree candidates, including Australian Postgraduate Awards (APAs) and Tasmania Graduate Research Scholarships.  While admission to postgraduate enrolment can be made at any time, scholarships are advertised each year with a closing date of 31 October, to be taken up in the following year (in some years there is also a mid-year round – check the web site for details). Full details of the scholarships available can be found on the Web at www.research.utas.edu.au/gr/scholarships/index.htm.  APAs are available to Australian citizens and, under certain conditions, to other permanent residents of Australia. In general they are for full-time candidature only, but candidates who have heavy care commitments or a medical condition precluding full-time study may be permitted to hold awards on a part-time basis. An APA provides a stipend (living allowance) a relocation allowance to take up the award, an establishment allowance and a thesis allowance. (Research higher degrees do not attract a HECS liability). The award is renewable annually subject to satisfactory progress for a total of three years for a full-time PhD candidate and two years for a full-time Masters candidate.

NB An application for a scholarship is made separately from an application for candidature.
