The Study
Environment
Each postgraduate student is provided with office space in the School,
access to a computer with word-processing, e-mail and Internet facilities
and access to the School tea-room. In this environment postgraduates
benefit from close regular contact with staff and other postgraduate
students.
The School provides opportunities to tutor in undergraduate courses
and expressions of interest to undertake such work are requested
from postgraduates each year. Such tutoring provides additional
financial support and a chance to broaden ones intellectual
and teaching competence it is also a very useful asset on
the job market especially for those who wish to go on to an academic
career. Staff with research grants also regularly employ Research
Assistants and this can be another source of income for postgraduate
students. Both options are, however, subject to the availability
of relevant funding from year to year.
Living in Hobart and living
in Launceston
Why have more stress in your life than you have to?
Postgraduate study is a challenge in itself without the rest of
life being stressful. Both Hobart and Launceston offer a peaceful
and beautiful environment in which to study. Hobart, the states
capital, sits between the Derwent river and Mt Wellington and has
all the advantages of a major Australian city without the stress.
Launceston, the states second largest city, overlooks the
Tamar river and is home to the spectacular Gorge. Both cities are
just a few hours away from some of Australias premier bushwalking
areas, not to mention boating, fishing, skiing, and much more. Both
cities (Launceston to a lesser degree) also nurture a thriving arts
and cultural life and a thriving café culture.
