Welcome

Welcome to the School of Philosophy at the University of Tasmania.

The School comprises three undergraduate programmes: Philosophy, Logic and Philosophy of Science and Gender Studies, as well as providing facilities for postgraduate research in these areas.

The School has the equivalent of 10 full-time staff based at two main campuses in Hobart and Launceston. It is an important centre for philosophical research and is closely involved in the editorship of the International Journal of Philosophical Studies.

The School has three main areas of expertise in Philosophy: Applied Ethics; European Philosophy; and Logic and Philosophy of Science. In addition the School has special programmes in Comparative Philosophy, especially Buddhist philosophy, and in Feminist Philosophy, the latter being closely connected with the Gender Studies programme that is also based in the School.

The School is home to the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Ethics, which has both a community outreach role as well as undertaking consultancy and advisory service in the public and private sectors.

The School also has a Buddhist Exchange Program which promotes exchange within the Tasmania community on issues of religious belief, peace and non-violence.
