This project studies Martin Heidegger's thought, especially the early formative phase (1919-1925). On the historical level, it is concerned with establishing the constellation of thoughts and ideas which led to the crystallization of Heidegger's early philosophy, as expressed in his lectures and writings in the early 1920's. Of particular interest is Heidegger's shift from transcendental to hermeneutical phenomenology, reflecting Heidegger's attempt to find a balance between Dilthey's historicism and Husserl's apriorism. Of equal importance is Heidegger's interpretation of the neo-Kantians (Windelband, Rickert, Lask, Natorp, and Cassirer) on the one hand and the life-philosophers (Bergson, Klages, Nietzsche, Scheler, and Simmel) on the other hand. In particular, the project aims at unearthing the largely unknown impact of the Historical School (Ranke, Mommsen, Droysen) on Heidegger's early anti-essentialism and proto-"existentialism." Through original research at the Heidegger Archives in Germany I was able to establish the exact nature of Yorck von Wartenburg's and Droysen's thought on Heidegger. On the theoretical level, the project aims at clarifying the nature and the limits of phenomenological philosophy. Here the main questions concern the problems of non-intentional consciousness, the relation of time and consciousness, body and consciousness, history and consciousness, and the connection between phenomenology and neuroscience.
