The genetic improvement program aims to determine in temperate eucalypt species the extent to which traits of economic and biological importance are under genetic control and amenable to artificial selection and breeding. Such traits include growth, wood quality, pest and disease resistance and reproductive characteristics. There is high demand for improved eucalypts for plantation establishment, and the project will study factors affecting sexual reproduction in order to optimise eucalypt seed production systems.
