The early Pleistocene was a critical phase in the evolution of our biota, and a major period of plant extinction and evolution.
This study analyses the macrofossils from a volcanic crater in Victoria, in collaboration with specialists in fossil pollen and insects. It is revealing species extinctions and the presence of species that now only have relatives in New Zealand and New Caledonia.
