POLICY STATEMENT

1    Intent

 

To support Conjoint Doctoral Degrees.

2    Scope

 

Applies to all Conjoint Doctoral Degrees and Conjoint Arrangements.

3    Objective(s)

 

To establish a framework for the support of Conjoint Doctoral degrees.

4    Definitions and Acronyms

 

Conjoint Arrangement

An arrangement between the University and a Partner Institution for the joint administration and award of a doctoral research degree, under which the candidate is enrolled, supervised and examined by both institutions.

Conjoint Doctoral Degree

A doctoral research degree that is jointly administered and awarded by the University and a Partner Institution under a Conjoint Arrangement.

Partner Institution

A foreign University or other educational institution with the power to confer degrees.

6    Policy Provisions

 


6.1 The University will enter Conjoint Arrangements only where:

(a) there is an existing, ongoing or developing research collaboration between the University and the Partner Institution;
(b) it provides enhanced opportunities for research cooperation between the institutions and the academic supervisors involved; and
(c) there are strong academic reasons for completing a doctoral degree at both institutions and the arrangement will provide a significantly improved research training environment for candidates.

6.2 All Conjoint Arrangements entered by the University must be evidenced in writing by a formal agreement. Typically, this will include:

(a) a memorandum of understanding that:

(i) establishes the relationship between the University and the Partner Institution;
(ii) records the parties’ desire to enter Conjoint Arrangements; and
(iii) lists any admission pre-requisites or selection criteria that potential candidates must meet; and

(b) a candidate-specific agreement for each Conjoint Arrangement that the parties elect to enter, and which contains the details and terms and conditions in respect of the Conjoint Arrangement for that candidate.

6.3 The Board of Graduate Research is responsible for determining the terms and conditions of the agreements referred to in clause 6.2, provided that:

(a) all Conjoint Arrangements comply with Australian law; and
(b) the exercise of any and all obligations assumed by the University under a Conjoint Arrangement complies with all applicable University Ordinances, Rules and Policies;

6.4 The Board of Graduate Research is to make available to potential candidates, information about:

(a) the Partner Institutions with which the University has a Conjoint Doctoral Degree relationship;
(b) the process for applying for enrolment in a Conjoint Doctoral Degree; and
(c) the specific admission pre-requisites and selection criteria in relation to each Partner Institution.
