Development of A Commercial-Ready Pre-Blast Explosive Analyser for Inorganic-Based Homemade Explosive (HME) Screening (2011 - 2013)$1,225,000
Description
This project aims to develop screening technology for inorganic and peroxide homemade explosives. It consists of a front end sample interface, a rapid capillary electrophoresis separation of inorganic anions and chemiluminescence detection of peroxide explosives after degradation to hydrogen peroxide. The proposed research will consider two approaches for peroxide separation: a short liquid chromatography column; and a second approach focusing on rapid degradation of H2O2 or utilisation of degradation kinetics to differentiate different peroxides.

Non-discriminatory, Universal and Sensitive Detection Technologies for Fluid Based Separation Techniques in the Pharmaceutical Industry (2008 - 2011)$584,274
Description
There exists an endemic problem in the global pharmaceutical industry regarding detection of compounds with no UV absorbing chromophore during chromatographic analyses conducted over all stages of drug development, from discovery through to production. Mass spectrometry partly addresses this problem, but is expensive. This project will investigate a range of non-discriminatory, universal detection systems, based upon nebulisation, electrochemical and ionisation technologies, which can be applied to existing routine separations. Major outcomes will be the development of a range of sensitive, rugged and easy to use detectors, together with predictive software to enable simple selection of the best detection approach.
