Biography

Pavel Nesterenko received MSc in Petrochemistry and Organic Catalysis (1979), PhD (1984) and DSc (1999) in Analytical Chemistry degrees in Department of Chemistry, Lomonosov Moscow State University (Moscow, Russia).

In 1983, took up the position of Researcher at the Division of Neuropharmacology of the Central Science Laboratory of Ministry Public Health of USSR in Moscow. This research was continued after transfer of the Division into All Union Institute of General and Forensic Psychiatry in 1986.

In 1987 joined with research team as researcher at All-Union Institute of Genetics and Selection of Industrial Microorganisms where focused attention of chromatographic analysis (HPLC, TLC, paper chromatography, derivatization methods) of intermediates and products of amino acid biosynthesis in cultural liquids as well as investigation of mechanisms of their production.

In 1988 he got position of Senior Researcher at the Department of Chemistry M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University, Moscow. After getting DSc degree in 1999 held positions of Leading Researcher (2001) and Professor of Analytical Chemistry (2003).In 2006 was awarded Quantum Leap Professor position at Australian Centre for Research on Separation Science, at the University of Tasmania, Hobart, Australia. Currently, Prof. Nesterenko holds a strategic position of New Stars Professor at the same university.

Research Themes

Pavel's research interests are associated with the development, investigation and application of non-traditional adsorbents and stationary phases for the various separation techniques and specific applications including high-performance chelation ion chromatography, chiral phase chromatography of enantiomers, ligand-exchange chromatography, simultaneous determination of anions and cations, determination of traces of metals in complex samples. The most recent research is focused on development of diamond based and nanocarbon-carbon adsorbents for ultra-high performance liquid chromatography.

Collaboration

In 2004-2007 Pavel took part in the international project 'Adventure with nuclear spin-isomers: separation, physical chemistry and application of ortho- and para-water' supported by New and emerging science and technologies (NEST) Adventure grant within Framework 6 programme of European Union. (400,000 EUR). The multinational team of the project joining scientists from University of Torino (Italy), University of Cologne (Germany), Université Henri Poincaré, (Nancy, France) and Institute of General Physics (Moscow, Russia) studied the possibility of isolation and characterisation of spin isomers of water and use them in medical diagnostics.

Pavel was a Founder and Funded collaborator of Project 1 'Materials' with allocated ca. 1,000,000 EUR of Strategic Research Clusters Programme grant (08/SRC/B1412) funded by Science Foundation of Ireland (SFI). From 2009 he carried out joint research with the Irish Separation Science Cluster on development of comprehensive multi-dimensional and multi-modal separation science for complex biological systems.

Recently (2010-2013) Pavel also participated in the international project 'MASK: Material and Advanced Sensor Knowledge Exchange' supported by Grant of Australian Academy of Sciences in connection with International Research Staff Exchange Scheme (IRSES) - Marie Curie Staff Exchange grant, as a part of EU Framework 7. The main focus in this project was directed on development of new prospective materials.

Current projects

Currently Pavel is acting as principal investigator for two ARC Discovery projects, as key investigator in ARC Training Centre for Portable Analytical Separation Technologies (ASTech) and as collaborator with ARC Centre of Excellence for Electromaterials Science (ACES, http://www.electromaterials.edu.au).

The aim of ARC Discovery DP130101518 (https://researchdata.ands.org.au/resolving-dissolved-organic-separation-approaches/535250)  project is to explore the origin and nature of dissolved organic matter (DOM) through the application of new mono- and multi-dimensional chromatographic techniques. Such approaches can overcome irreversible adsorption and co-elution issues associated with conventional chromatographic techniques and to finally isolate and identify individual molecules from DOM.

The most recent ARC Discovery project DP150102608 (https://researchdata.ands.org.au/discovery-projects-grant-id-dp150102608/617993) exploits the superior physicochemical properties of nanocarbon materials for the construction of new type of adsorbents. Together with advanced porous structure it will result in a new generation of chromatographic phases and provide unique possibility to increase separation performance in liquid chromatography and related technologies. 

ASTech (http://astech.org.au) is a partnership between the University of Tasmania and Trajan Scientific and Medical, combining research and industry knowledge to innovate in product design and manufacturing techniques, contributing to a sustainable, globally competitive manufacturing industry in Australia.

Carbonaceous adsorbents for ultra-high performance liquid chromatography (2015 - 2017)$334,100
Description
This project will develop a new generation of mechanically and thermally stable carbon-nanocarbon composite adsorbents for ultra high-performance liquid chromatography. The structure of adsorbents will be constructed according to advanced core-shell design with non-porous carbon central core and porous shell formed by highly ordered uniform nanocarbon particles. The unique properties of carbon-nanocarbon composite adsorbents will put liquid chromatography to qualitatively new levels of the separation performance that opens new possibilities for medicine and biodiagnostics. The resulting technology also has a strong potential to be used in other priority areas such as preparation of electrodes and supercapacitors for energy storage devices.

The project will investigate the molecular nature of dextran sulphate samples, using size exclusion chromatography to characterise molecular weight distributions. The project will develop the appropriate and optimum chromatographic conditions to provide the desired size distribution data and apply the optimised method to SBS unknown samples (up to 10 samples in first instance). The investigation will include investigation into degree of sulphation based upon combination of elemental analysis and electrophoretic methods.

The development of new adhesive polymers and their application to material sourced from human teeth (2014)$7,400

The aim of the project is to test a recently reported adhesive polymer in a dental context. It aims to assess whether this new polymer can be adhered to and be compatible with tooth material. It is hoped that it may exhibit high strength and biocompatibility properties. Biocompatibility is important for an adhesive in tooth restoration, as it can indicate a long lifespan for that restoration.

Resolving Dissolved Organic Matter: New Multi-dimensional Separation Approaches. (2013 - 2015)$480,000
Description
This project explores the origin and nature of complex dissolved organic (carbon) matter (DOM), through the development and application of new multi-dimensional analytical technology. Through greater understanding of the character of this complex material, the project sheds new light upon the role such oceanic carbon sinks play in global carbon cycles. Specifically, the project utilises the only recently available high-performance counter current chromatography (HPCCC) as a fractionation tool for collected DOM samples, prior to fractional analysis using orthoganol chromatographic techniques coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry, and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (2DNMR).

Micro-disperse Sintered Nano-diamonds: a New Class of Versatile Adsorbent for High Performance Liquid Chromatography (2011 - 2013)$350,000
Description
Micro-disperse sintered nano-diamond meets many requirements for potential use as a new class of adsorbent within the next generation of separation science technologies. These requirements include unique micro-porous structure, excellent mechanical and chemical stability, high thermal stability, low chemical surface reactivity, biocompatibility and low cost of production. This project will provide unique characterisation of the adsorption properties of micro-disperse sintered aggregates of nano-diamonds, and for the first time investigate surface modification chemistry to improve selectivity and specificity of the adsorbents. It will effectively realise the advantageous potential of such materials in different modes of high performance liquid chromatography.
