Projects

Improved productivity and profitability for the Australian apple and pear industry (2015 - 2019)$900,000
Description
This project in collaboration with Plant Food Research will develop a multi-season N budget underpinned by fertigation research that builds on findings from the current fertigation project (AP12006) and a decision support tool that will guide advisor/grower optimisation of irrigation and fertigation application for all major national regions. Fertigation research will include the continuation of a major ongoing nitrogen and irrigation trial at Lucaston Park Orchards in Southern Tasmania. This trial was established for AP12006 and fertigation and irrigation treatments will continue for the next four growing seasons creating one of the longest intensive nutrition trials ever completed in the POME fruit industry. Undertaking litter decomposition studies, labelled N research and monitoring tree performance and N leaching will enable us to determine for the first time a complete N budget for commercial apple production. This research will provide an understanding of how fertiliser application approach, rates and timings can be managed to best satisfy the trees N requirements, mitigate leaching and optimize productivity without a cost to fruit quality. The decision support tool backed by a meta-model incorporating data from field N fertigation trials, multi-site regional soil parameterisation, climate and tree physiological datasets will provide growers with a reliable assessment of their orchards soil, water and nutrient status based on their irrigation and fertiliser inputs. Growers and advisors will be trained in the usage of the decision support tool. This research will enable growers and advisers to explore different irrigation and fertilizer strategies and management practices for different soil types and climates in order to optimize yield achievement without cost to quality.

Improved red wine process efficiency and product quality through enhanced phenolic extraction by controlled phenolic release (CPR) and berry pricking (2014 - 2017)$447,261
Description
Skin contact time for phenolic extraction in red winemaking seriously constrains winery throughput. Winemaker groups consulted about phenolic extraction processes reported that some red grape varieties require prolonged time on skins for adequate extraction. Controlled Phenolic Release (CPR) is a novel winemaking process which couples microwave maceration with managed post-maceration phenolic diffusion. Three years of laboratory-scale research have shown CPR can achieve rapid, effective, predictable extraction of red grape phenolics. A second prototype rapid extraction process, 'berry pricking' was proven effective for Pinot noir in trials conducted on a semi-commercial scale in 2013. Both CPR and berry pricking are in-line processes which increase winery process efficiency, enhance quality and improve profitability. This project collaborates with engineers and winemakers in Victoria, NSW and Tasmania to pilot CPR and berry pricking, and identify and disseminate best practice for winemaking using these processes.

How does tannin and anthocyanin in the grapes relate to wine quality? (2014)$6,000
Description
Tannin is a critical component of red wine and influences both wine colour and mouth-feel. Research has shown good correlation between wine grades and tannin concentration. Young wines contain free anthocyanins, but as wines age they are incorporated into stable pigment, mainly through reaction with tannin. The proposed project aims to define the relationship between grape tannin and anthocyanin and the resulting wine tannin and anthocyanin. Using ten Tasmanian vineyards to obtain a good spectrum of fruit types, Pinot Noir fruit of the same clone will be collected at commercial harvest. Fruit will then be tested for total tannin and total anthocyanin. Small scale wine making will be performed and at the end of fermentation the wine will undergo the same analysis for total tannin and anthocyanin. It is possible that the result will be a prediction tool to allow growers to select fruit parcels based on the desired final wine quality or options for manipulating the fruit during the wine making process to achieve desired outcome. Leaf removal is a commonly used strategy to improve the light environment around the bunch, which in turn can improve colour and tannin development. At each of the trial sites in this study, a leaf removal treatment will be imposed in an attempt to promote greater tannin and anthocyanin development. This higher light environment could impact the grape concentration of the compounds, which will become evident in the grape and wine analysis. This project focuses on the measurement of tannin and colour of red grapes specifically.

ARC Industrial Transformation Training Centre for Innovative Horticultural Products: Adding value to horticulture value (2014 - 2016)$2,511,605
Description
Training Centre for Innovative Horticultural Products: Adding value to horticulture value chains from producer to consumer. This project will produce "industry-relevant" researchers and lead to more convenient and longer lasting fresh and fresh-like fruits and vegetables. The project will involve growers, food processors and a major retailer to increase industry productivity, expand markets for Australian foods, and increase choices of healthy products for consumers. This Centre will train a pool of researchers focussed on needs and opportunities in the Australian food industry through projects and formal training with active collaboration from food growers, processors and retailers. This training model and its graduates will enhance the capacity of Australia's fresh produce industry to innovate to meet consumer needs and develop opportunities in local and international markets, aiding Australia's food security and improving the industry's competitiveness.

Agronomic performance of diverse hemp germplasm (2013)$5,653
Description
This project is a trial of seed types from different latitudes worldwide which will be used to ascertain potential productive yields of both Seed and Fibre. All seed types have been tested to be under the THC level required under Tasmanian Health legislation for Industrial Hemp. Plots would consist of a 4x6m plot of approximately 5 rows with 12 plants per row in a prescribed pot and potting media, watering and fertiliser regime likely sowing October-September and harvest in mid-November December (for seed types) and harvest February (fibre types). This project would form one of a number of plot trials up the Eastern Seaboard investigating the impact of latitude on production of this short-day species. The objective is to find the best producing plant material for Tasmanian conditions for both seed and fibre yield and quality.

Devising Ecologically Sustainable Restoration Programs for Degraded Rural Landscapes by Integrating Landscape Ecology, Conservation Genetics and Ecophysiology (2009 - 2012)$730,000
Description
Restoring the ecological function of degraded rural landscapes is a national priority, yet achieving this goal remains a major challenge. Combining approaches from different ecological disciplines the project will: (a) identify priority areas for tree plantings; (b) determine which tree species can establish in degraded landscapes, and have the capacity to grow in the predicted hotter and drier climates in the late 21st century; (c) evaluate whether local species or races are necessarily better than non-local types; and (d) understand the trade-off between tree growth, carbon storage and water use. This research will provide an urgently needed scientific framework for proposed large-scale restoration of degraded Tasmanian rural landscapes.
