Projects engage students in understanding the relationship between individual buildings and the broader physical, temporal, cultural and conceptual context in which they are located.

Both student studio projects and academic research explore a range of urban issues, focusing on the role of architecture in developing a relationship between urban design, development and planning.

Design Innovation in Timber and Bamboo (2016)$7,000
Description
Vietnam is known for its low-cost labour, strong work ethic, excellent craftsmanship and plentiful timber and bamboo. Increasing urbanisation and improving living standards demand a better quality built environment. However, local industry lacks the knowledge and access to advanced design and fabrication technologies to enhance quality and efficiency. This project investigates how digital design and Computer Numerically Controlled fabrication technologies can address environmental and social sustainability issues in Vietnam. It explores opportunities to innovate and add value to Vietnamese uses of timber and bamboo across Architecture, Design and Engineering disciplines.
