Research Themes

David's research aligns to the University's research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. During his tenure at the University of Tasmania, David has worked as a geochemist and economic geologist specialising in the characteristics and origins of:

  • Porphyry Cu-Au and Cu-Mo deposits
  • Epithermal precious metal systems
  • Sediment-hosted Pb-Zn deposits of northern Australia

David also specialises in chemical modelling of mineralising processes from a variety of hydrothermal environments. The principal techniques that he employs include mineralogical, fluid inclusion, chemical modelling, and isotopic studies, built on a framework of detailed geological and structural field data collection. David is best known for his porphyry and epithermal research. Since 1985 David, his students and his postdoctoral research fellows have investigated porphyry and epithermal deposits in the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Australia, New Zealand, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Peru, Canada and Chile. The team's most significant contributions to this research field include new insights into: ore genesis and exploration models for porphyry deposits; the chemistry of ore transport and deposition in epithermal environments; genesis of hydrothermal breccias; and genetic relationships between porphyry and epithermal styles of mineralisation.

Collaboration

David has been a leader of nine major team-based industry-funded research projects since 1998. Each of these three-or four-year projects has involved a team of academic staff, postdoctoral research fellows, and postgraduate students (PhD, Masters, honours) working in close collaboration with industry partners. Industry-funded research projects led by Professor Cooke have involved international collaborations with staff and students at the University of British Columbia, Lakehead University and Ottawa University (Canada), Colorado School of Mines (USA), Imperial College London (UK), and Hefei University of Technology and Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences (China). National collaborations have involved staff from CSIRO, James Cook University, Australian National University and the NSW Geological Survey. Successful outcomes of these collaborations are reflected through joint authorship of journal articles by team members from the various collaborating institutions, including four special issues of international journals: Giant Porphyry Deposits (Economic Geology 2005; v. 100); The Ordovician to Early Silurian Macquarie Arc Deposits (Australian Journal of Earth Sciences 2007; v 54); Philippine Porphyry and Epithermal Deposits (Economic Geology 2011; v 106); and Alkalic Mineral Deposits (Economic Geology 2014).

Awards

David was the recipient of the SEG Thayer Lindsay Award in 2005. In 2012 David, together with Bruce Gemmell and the AMIRA P765/765A/1060 research team, won the inaugural AMIRA International Award for Geoscience Research Excellence. David was awarded the SEG Silver Medal in 2013.

Mass spectrometry for next generation isotope analysis of silicate minerals (2018)$464,531
Description
This proposal aims to establish a distributed facility for preparative equipment and mass spectrometers to enable a step change in Australian capacity to analyse the stable isotope composition of silicate minerals. The stable isotope composition of silicate minerals provides a fingerprint and tracer of geological and environmental processes employed across the earth sciences, environmental sciences and archaeology in research ranging from ore deposit formation to past environmental change to identifying trade networks from lithic artefacts. The project seeks to implement innovations that will greatly enhance the use of stable isotopes in silicate minerals in all these areas by increasing analytical throughput and reducing cost.

Magnetite and epidote chemistry and textures at Las Bambas Cu-Au-Fe skarn, Peru: assessing district and deposit-scale fertilityimplications for ore genesis and exploration (2016)$8,000
Description
The ultimate goal of this PhD project is to determine whether magnetite and/or epidote have potential for exploration vectoring and fertility assessment at Las Bambas. This goal will be achieved by addressing the following research questions and associated sub-questions (outcomes are italicized and stated in parentheses after each question). Note that if early investigation highlights fundamental barriers to the applicability of these phases, other minerals may be targeted:1) What is the spatial distribution and paragenesis of magnetite and epidote at Las Bambas? (maps, graphic logs and 3-D block models of magnetite abundance, modes of occurrence (vein, replacement, primary igneous, etc), relationships to mineralisation and alteration; protolith controls)2) What are the textural and chemical characteristics of magnetite and epidote at Las Bambas? (detailed images of magnetite and epidote textures generated via ore microscopy, SEM, LA-ICP-MS; chemical analyses and chemical maps generated using electron microprobe, SEM andMagnetite and epidote chemistry at Las Bambas Cu-Au-Fe skarn, Peru PhD Research Plan Page 11 of 13LA-ICP-MS; spatial assessments of geochemical dispersion patterns generated using IOGAS, Leapfrog, and other visualisation software)a. Can mapping of magnetite and/or epidote textures provide information regarding ore genesis and/or proximity to skarn and/or porphyry-style mineralisation?b. Can the trace element compositions of magnetite and/or epidote provide methods for assessing the fertility of discrete prospects and entire districts during reconnaissance sampling of outcropping skarns?c. Can trace element compositions of magnetite and/or epidote provide information regarding ore genesis, proximity to skarn and/or porphyry-style mineralisation?d. Does the trace element chemistry of magnetite and/or epidote provide exploration geochemistry data unobtainable by conventional analytical techniques? (e.g., a broader geochemical footprint than can be defined by whole rock geochemical analyses of rock chip and/or drill core samples)?3) What is the relationship between magnetite, mushketovite and hematite, and how does this affect applicability of mineral chemistry to exploration at Las Bambas (type section style petrographic and chemical analytical work on these phases, similar to (2) above)4) What are the conditions of magnetite and epidote formation? (stable isotopic and fluid inclusion datasets that help to constrain ore genesis at Las Bambas)5) How do the outcomes of this PhD study impact on our genetic and exploration models for Cu-Au-Fe skarns locally and globally? (new models for ore genesis and exploration developed from the detailed geological and geochemical data generated from Las Bambas)

The geology, mineralization, alteration and fluid evolution of Zijinshan ore field, Fujian Province, China (2014)$4,050
Description
This project uses detailed geological, mapping and sampling as the starting point for building a build a 3-D model of hypogene and supergene alteration and sulfide mineral zonation in the Zijin open pit. In order to achieve this goal, the project will build on the wealth of previous knowledge and datamine Zijins extensive database of alteration mineralogy and assay data, supplementing this where necessary with detailed drill core logging, sampling and/or mapping of hypogene and supergene alteration and mineralization assemblages, coupled with SWIR analyses, lithogeochemistry, mineral chemistry, isotopic and fluid inclusion analyses. During this process, the project will increase the stock of knowledge about Zijin and a full understanding of Zijinshan high sulfidation and ore deposits. The outcomes will provide insights about a typical high sulfidation deposit, which would highly increase the understandings of other deposits of this type. The project will expand on an excellent knowledge base through detailed lab work such as microprobe, SWIR and laser ablation investigations of the kandite, alunite and sericite group minerals, with an emphasis on using subtle variations in these mineral compositions as a tool to help vector towards high sulfidation or porphyry-style ore zones. The development of the anaconda method will make it more useful for industry.
