Biography

Bruce Gemmell is the Director of the world-leading ARC Centre of Excellence Centre in Ore Deposits (CODES) at the University of Tasmania.  Bruce obtained his B.Sc. in 1979 from the University of British Columbia and M.Sc. and PhD (1987) from Dartmouth College, USA. His early research was on the trace metal geochemistry of volcanic gases from active volcanoes in Costa Rica and Nicaragua and the geology and mineralogy of epithermal Ag veins in Mexico. Bruce later gained extensive experience in a wide range of ore deposit types, including landmark research on the volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits of Western Tasmania and the North American cordillera, epithermal deposits in Mexico and Indonesia, structurally-controlled copper deposits in Australia, as well as on modern seafloor hydrothermal systems. More recently he and his students have conducted detailed research on base and precious metal vein systems in Indonesia and South America, developing process-based exploration models focusing on zoning in the porphyry-epithermal transition (AMIRA projects P588, P765, P765A, P1060 and the newly started P1153). Bruce has supervised over 50 M.Sc. and Ph.D. students and has won a number of awards for his teaching at UTAS. He has published over 70 refereed papers in international journals and is well known for his many short courses on mineral exploration to international audiences worldwide. Bruce has been a member of the editorial boards of both Mineralium Deposita and Economic Geology, and he has been guest editor of numerous Special Issues of Economic Geology focusing on VHMS and epithermal ore deposits.

Research Themes

Bruce specialises in the geology and genesis of modern and ancient volcanic-hosted massive sulfide and epithermal Ag-Au deposits, as well as hydrothermal alteration. His research aligns with the UTAS research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. He is internationally recognised for his research on the genesis of, and exploration for, modern and ancient volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposits (VHMS), and low and intermediate sulfidation epithermal deposits. Bruce has led or co-led numerous AMIRA projects including the highly successful P439 (VHMS alteration), P588 (low sulfidation epithermal alteration), and the P765-P765A-P1060 and current P1153 projects investigating enhancing the ability of exploration geologists to identify productive ore zones in porphyry-related mineral districts. He has collaborated with international colleagues on investigating the mineralogical and geochemical attributes of black shales in volcano-sedimentary environments as an aid to exploration.

Description
This topical study, investigates the crystallization history of volcanic stratigraphy of the Myra Falls volcanic-hostedmassive sulfide (VHMS) district of central Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Mineralization occurs at twostratigraphic horizons in volcanic strata of the mid-Paleozoic Sicker Group. Previous dating studies at Myra Falls haveyielded relatively imprecise crystallization ages. Major research objectives are to establish crystallization ages for thehost rocks and the temporal relationships between the two horizons. The author has conducted two field programs atMyra Falls with detailed drill hole examinations completed, and suitable samples obtained to conduct this study.

Geology and Genesis of the Mineral Deposits of the Myra Falls VHMS District, Canada (2014 - 2018)$165,000
Description
The aims of this project are to examine the surface geology, underground workings, drill core and computer database at Myra Falls in order to: characterise the geologic and structural setting of the West Block area; describe the deposit mineralogy, textures, paragenesis and metal zoning in the West Block area; determine the geochemical (trace elements, stable isotopes) characteristics and signature of the mineralisatuon and alteration; propose a model for the genesis of the VHMS deposits in the West Block area and compare them to other deposit in the Myra Falls District; develop useful criteria for exploration in the Myra Falls District.
