Dr Garry Davidson is a senior lecturer in economic geology, geochemistry, and groundwater. His special research interests are in iron oxide copper-gold deposits and related oxidised systems, and stable isotope applications to ore genesis and exploration.

Biography

After gaining a Geology BSc from ANU, Garry worked for three years in the exploration industry. His PhD was undertaken at UTAS and supervised by Professor Ross Large in the very earliest days of IOCG recognition and definition. Garry's PhD evaluated the geology and origin of the Starr and Osborne IOCG deposits, Mt Isa Inlier. Following the award of two five-year ARC fellowships and several smaller postdoctoral company-sponsored projects (for instance, with Western Mining Corp and BHP Billiton), Garry moved to a senior lecturer position involving a large lecturing role in the School of Earth Sciences, but retained his role as a CODES researcher. His lecturing role also includes responsibility for groundwater teaching in the School of Earth Sciences.

Professional practice

Garry is the current Chairman of the Geological Society of Australia (Tasmania division) and has recently completed a stay on the editorial board of Mineralium Deposita. Garry is on the organising committee for the Society for Economic Geologists conference in Hobart in October 2015, where he is responsible for Field trips, and is also the convenor of the sessions on iron oxide-copper-gold deposits.

Controls on copper mineralising processes in the McArthur Basin, NT, and its implications for the metallogeny of extensional basins (2016)$32,561
Description
In this study, we will evaluate a mineral province which is celebrated for its zinc‐lead‐silvermineralisation, but we will be focussing on copper. The Proterozoic McArthur Basin is part ofthe north Australian Carpentaria Zinc Belt; it contains one very major example of stratiformshale‐hosted zinc‐rich ore deposit (McArthur River/HYC), and a host of similar minor deposits,in a structurally complex region called the Batten Fault Zone (BFZ). Because of this, theMcArthur Basin has long been thought to be a single commodity basin. However, both 50 kmwest and east of the main line of zinc deposits, there are camps with a significant number ofoccurrences of copper‐rich historical workings, that are stratigraphically in the RedbankPackage (Rawlings 1999), which is dominated by the Tawallah Group (the basal unit of theMcArthur Basin), ie stratigraphically deeper than the hosts to the zinc deposits. There are alsosome deposits in the lower McArthur Group. Key prospect examples are Johnstons,Coppermine Creek, Sly Creek, Darcys, Margoo, and the Tawallah Pocket. Most of these wereprospected over the last 100 years, but at least one (Coppermine Creek) has been the subjectof recent (2006) exploration drilling, and yielded a significant intercept of copper (17 m @ 0.5%Cu, with a high of >8% Cu; Sandfire Resources, 2006) from an electrical geophysical target thatis 1.8 km long.

Determination of the temporal relationship between the pyrite-silica-sericite alteration, and spatially associated uranium mineralisation, at Angularli Deposit, East Arnhem Land (2016)$10,465
Description
the project examines an exciting new area of unconformity-style uranium mineralisation in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory, than has been discovered by Cameco. The deposit has several unusual alteration types associated with it. The aim is therefore to determine the timing of the different observed hydrothermal facies, and compare these to other examples of uranium-forming hydrothermal activity in the East Alligator Uranium Province. This work will allow us to understand the evolution of the deposit, and further to refine understanding of uranium forming processes in the north Australian craton in general during the Mesoproterozoic Era. This is our (UTas) first project in this area with Cameco. If the project is successful, it is likely it will lead to further collaborative research.

First application of high-resolution CA-ID-TIMS U-Pb zircon dating to resolve the timing of the H-W and L-M-P ore horizons of the Myra Falls VHMS district (2016)$6,924
Description
This topical study, investigates the crystallization history of volcanic stratigraphy of the Myra Falls volcanic-hostedmassive sulfide (VHMS) district of central Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada. Mineralization occurs at twostratigraphic horizons in volcanic strata of the mid-Paleozoic Sicker Group. Previous dating studies at Myra Falls haveyielded relatively imprecise crystallization ages. Major research objectives are to establish crystallization ages for thehost rocks and the temporal relationships between the two horizons. The author has conducted two field programs atMyra Falls with detailed drill hole examinations completed, and suitable samples obtained to conduct this study.

Description
In the past five years, dramatic escalations in the price of platinum group elements (POE's) has ignited interest in their geology. Their derivation by high temperature processes in mafic-ultramafic igneous rocks is well known, but some also toned by moderate temperature hydrothermal means in sedimentary basins, providing added value to some unconformity style U-Au deposits in the Northern Territory. To improve the ore deposit model of this style, the project aims to work on one deposit (Coronation Hill) to refine knowledge of the source of metals, the timing of PGE introduction, and the nature of mineral deposition.
