Dr Ivan Belousov is a Research Fellow in Geochemistry at the School of Physical Sciences (Discipline of Earth Sciences and CODES). He is interested in the fields related to Laser Ablation ICP-MS (LA-ICP-MS), origin and evolution of magmas, composition of the Earth's mantle and ore deposits geochemistry.

Biography

Before joining the University of Tasmania, Ivan completed his PhD at the Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry in Moscow, Russia, under the supervision of Professor Alexander Sobolev. His thesis was on the mantle section of the Voykar Ophiolite (Polar Urals). A substantial part of the project was completed at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz, Germany. Ivan's industry experience includes working some time for De Beers doing kimberlite exploration in CIS and for Schpz (Satka) doing manganese exploration in Africa.

Research Themes

Ivan's research aligns to the University's research theme of Environment, Resources and SustainabilityHis research interests include understanding fundamentals of LA-ICP-MS, LA-ICP-MS method development and development of calibration standards for LA-ICP-MS. His other interests include 1) origin and evolution of magmas via processes of mantle melting and melt/fluid transport in the mantle above subduction zones; and 2) geochemistry of ore deposits, in particular vectoring towards ore deposits using mineral chemistry. He is also working with Dr Sebastien Meffre and Professor Leonid Danyushevsky on a range of industry-funded projects.

Collaboration

Ivan is involved in collaborative project with Geological Survey of Western Australia (GSWA) looking at pyrite and magnetite chemistry variation for orogenic Au and VHMS deposits of Western Australia. He is also involved in ARC Industrial Transformation Research Hub – Transforming the Mining Value Chain.
