Magnetite and epidote chemistry and textures at Las Bambas Cu-Au-Fe skarn, Peru: assessing district and deposit-scale fertilityimplications for ore genesis and exploration (2016)$8,000
Description
The ultimate goal of this PhD project is to determine whether magnetite and/or epidote have potential for exploration vectoring and fertility assessment at Las Bambas. This goal will be achieved by addressing the following research questions and associated sub-questions (outcomes are italicized and stated in parentheses after each question). Note that if early investigation highlights fundamental barriers to the applicability of these phases, other minerals may be targeted:1) What is the spatial distribution and paragenesis of magnetite and epidote at Las Bambas? (maps, graphic logs and 3-D block models of magnetite abundance, modes of occurrence (vein, replacement, primary igneous, etc), relationships to mineralisation and alteration; protolith controls)2) What are the textural and chemical characteristics of magnetite and epidote at Las Bambas? (detailed images of magnetite and epidote textures generated via ore microscopy, SEM, LA-ICP-MS; chemical analyses and chemical maps generated using electron microprobe, SEM andMagnetite and epidote chemistry at Las Bambas Cu-Au-Fe skarn, Peru PhD Research Plan Page 11 of 13LA-ICP-MS; spatial assessments of geochemical dispersion patterns generated using IOGAS, Leapfrog, and other visualisation software)a. Can mapping of magnetite and/or epidote textures provide information regarding ore genesis and/or proximity to skarn and/or porphyry-style mineralisation?b. Can the trace element compositions of magnetite and/or epidote provide methods for assessing the fertility of discrete prospects and entire districts during reconnaissance sampling of outcropping skarns?c. Can trace element compositions of magnetite and/or epidote provide information regarding ore genesis, proximity to skarn and/or porphyry-style mineralisation?d. Does the trace element chemistry of magnetite and/or epidote provide exploration geochemistry data unobtainable by conventional analytical techniques? Magmatic-hydrothermal volatile exsolution and mineralisation in Tasmanian Sn granites (2015)$5,705

This PhD project is conducting a study of geoloical and geochemical speciality at mineralised and barren granites in Tasmania, and the formation of magmatic-hydrothermal tourmaline-rich textures in the Sn granites.It will refine a geological model of magmatic-hydrothermal melt-fluid-volatile evolution for the development of Sn mineralisation.

The geology, mineralization, alteration and fluid evolution of Zijinshan ore field, Fujian Province, China (2014)$4,050
Description
This project uses detailed geological, mapping and sampling as the starting point for building a build a 3-D model of hypogene and supergene alteration and sulfide mineral zonation in the Zijin open pit. In order to achieve this goal, the project will build on the wealth of previous knowledge and datamine Zijins extensive database of alteration mineralogy and assay data, supplementing this where necessary with detailed drill core logging, sampling and/or mapping of hypogene and supergene alteration and mineralization assemblages, coupled with SWIR analyses, lithogeochemistry, mineral chemistry, isotopic and fluid inclusion analyses. During this process, the project will increase the stock of knowledge about Zijin and a full understanding of Zijinshan high sulfidation and ore deposits. The outcomes will provide insights about a typical high sulfidation deposit, which would highly increase the understandings of other deposits of this type. The project will expand on an excellent knowledge base through detailed lab work such as microprobe, SWIR and laser ablation investigations of the kandite, alunite and sericite group minerals, with an emphasis on using subtle variations in these mineral compositions as a tool to help vector towards high sulfidation or porphyry-style ore zones. The development of the anaconda method will make it more useful for industry.
