Professor Dima Kamenetsky is a leading researcher on magma, fluid and ore genesis in a variety of ultramafic, basaltic and felsic rocks from different tectonic environments. His petrological and geochemical studies are powered by most efficient melt/fluid inclusion techniques and modern in-situ analytical methods. His leadership and impact in fundamental research has been recognised nationally and internationally with a number of prestigious awards including the Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Contributions to Internationally Recognised Research (UTAS), the Australian Research Council Professorial Fellowship Award, and the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award by Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, Germany. He is ranked in the top 0.3 % geoscience researchers in the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) by Thomson Reuters based on publication and citation metrics in the last 10 years.

Biography

Professor Kamenetsky received his BSc (1st class Hons) from the Moscow State University in 1984, and PhD from the Russian Academy of Sciences in 1991. He worked in the V.I. Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry (GEOKHI, Moscow) between 1984-1995, studying magmatism of mid-ocean ridges and island arcs and developing methods of melt inclusion research under supervision of Dr Alexander V. Sobolev. Together with colleagues in GEOCHI (A. Sobolev, L. Danyushevsky, A. Gurenko) Dima pioneered this research in the mid 1980's, and later 'exported' the methodology and applications to the University of Tasmania and other research institutions in Germany, France, Israel and Italy. His first visit to Australia in 1992-1993, prompted by Prof David H. Green and Dr Tony Crawford, helped to establish melt inclusion research methods in the University of Tasmania. This visit to Hobart was followed by a year of postdoctoral research in the Laboratoire Pierre Süe, CNRS–CEA (France), where the heating stage for studying melt inclusions and experimental technique were launched. His career in Australia, uninterrupted to date, began in 1995 with a one year visit to the Research School of Earth Sciences (ANU, Canberra), followed by two years in CODES (UTAS), an ARC Australian Research Fellowship (1999-2003, UTAS) and an ARC Professorial Research Fellowship (2005-2009, UTAS). Dima was a Visiting Professor to Germany in 2003-2004 (F.W. Bessel Research Award by A. von Humboldt Foundation, Max Planck Institute für Chemie, Mainz) and in 2012 (A. von Humboldt Foundation, University of Bonn). He has been a 'New Star Professor' in Earth Sciences (University of Tasmania) since 2010.

Research Themes

Prof Kamenetsky has extensive expertise in melt and fluid inclusion experimental and analytical studies, and the interpretation of conventional petrological and geochemical data. Dima has become internationally recognised for his research on the petrology and geochemistry of mantle-derived, primitive magmas in different geodynamic settings, application of melt inclusion studies to altered rocks from ophiolites, ancient volcanic belts and volcanogenic sediments, and origin and evolution of metal-bearing fluid phases during crystallisation of primitive to felsic magmas. The main theme of his research is immiscibility in common magmas and fluids. His research to date has resulted in:

  • First application of in-situ LA-ICPMS analysis of trace elements in melt and fluid inclusions (1996);
  • First application of experimental melt inclusion studies to spinel group minerals from volcanic and sedimentary rocks accepted for the ARC funding of the Australian Research Fellowship and Grant (Novel applications of melt inclusion studies: Insights into the magmatic history of porphyry Cu-Au deposits and provenance of volcaniclastic sediments) in 1999-2003;
  • New discrimination method to distinguish between tectonic settings of basaltic magmatism using chemistry of magmatic spinel and spinel-hosted melt inclusions (2001);
  • Discovery of immiscible metal-rich fluids and 'salt' melts associated with evolving basaltic to felsic magmas in a number of effusive and intrusive complexes accepted for the ARC funding of the Australian Professorial Fellowship and Discovery Grant (Unmixing in magmas: Melt and fluid Inclusion constraints on identity, timing, and evolution of immiscible fluids, salt and sulphide melts) in 2005-2009;
  • Detailed studies of melt pools in native iron with implications for large-scale liquid immiscibility in the Siberian Traps (2013);
  • First application of experimental melt inclusion studies to Precambrian rocks (2000);
  • Discovery of primary mantle-derived melts in a variety of geodynamic settings, including mid-ocean ridges, back-arc basins, island arcs, ocean islands and continents (1995-present);
  • Recognition of ultra-enriched primary melts of oceanic ridges, derived by exceptionally low melting degrees (2000);
  • First direct evidence for remnants of Precambrian continental (Gondwanan) lithosphere in the mantle source of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge basalts and occurrence of Pt-Pd-Au bearing Fe-Ni magmatic sulphide liquids in the melts derived from such source (2001);
  • First interpretation of kimberlite parental melts worldwide as essentially non-silicate, 'dry' carbonate-chloride melts (2004) and assessment of their potential to entrap diamond-bearing xenoliths and rapidly carry them to the surface (2007, 2015);
  • Discovery of kimberlites in Antarctica with implications to the Gondwanan Cretaceous diamondiferous province (2013);
  • Discovery of residual silica-gels at the point of solidification of magmas forming mineralised porphyries and evaluation of their role in forming quartz and concentrating economic elements (2009);
  • Assessment of parental melt compositions of intrusive carbonatites as alkali- and halogen-bearing (2013, 2015);
  • New interpretation of the origin and evolution of the supergiant Olympic Dam U-Cu-Au-Ag deposit (in progress).

Collaboration

Almost all publications by Prof Kamenetsky are a joint effort of many investigators. In Australia he collaborates with researchers from the Australian National University, Melbourne University, Monash University, La Trobe University, James Cook University, Curtin University, University of Queensland, BHP Billiton, CSIRO Exploration and Mining, Geoscience Australia and Tasmanian Geological Survey. His international collaborators reside in 19 countries, including Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Italy, Russia, Finland, Denmark, Taiwan, New Zealand, Canada, U.K., China, Japan, U.S.A., Israel, Hungary, Switzerland and Slovakia. More than 50% of his publications are in collaboration with international scientists. The most successful and productive collaborations are with Dr Maya Kamenetsky (University of Tasmania), Dr Roland Maas and Dr Andrea Giuliani (University of Melbourne), Dr Kathy Ehrig (BHP Billiton), and several researchers from the Max Planck Institute für Chemie (Mainz, Germany).

Prof Dima Kamenetsky receives research funding through the Australian Research Council, BHP Billiton Ltd., Alexander von Humboldt Society, Australian Academy of Sciences, Antarctic Science Advisory Committee, AMIRA International, Russian Foundation for Basic Research and the University of Tasmania, equivalent to > A$6 million since 1998 (excluding CODES and ARC Centre of Excellence funding). The ARC Discovery grant 'Kimberlites and Flood Basalts: Linking Primary Melts with Mantle and Crustal Sources' (2010-2012) has resulted in assigning principally new compositional and physical properties to primary melts of kimberlites (diamond-bearing rocks). The ARC-BHP Billiton Linkage grant 'The supergiant Olympic Dam U-Cu-Au-REE ore deposit: towards a new genetic model' (2014-2018) has produced data and ideas that will soon reshuffle the field of economic geology in terms of both fundamental thinking and future prospecting for mineral resources.

A state-of-the-art field emission electron microprobe for Tasmania (2016)$600,000
Description
This proposal aims to replace an existing 12-year old conventional electron microprobe with a state-of-the art fieldemission electron microprobe instrument capable of in-situ, low-level, quantitative non-destructive chemicalanalysis and mapping of element distribution at sub-micron resolution. The instrument will also performcathodoluminescence analysis to reveal crystal growth histories. This equipment will provide researchers andstudents at the University of Tasmania working in the fields of Earth and Materials Sciences, and the broaderTasmanian community with direct access to this technique ensuring continuing competitiveness to attract publicand industry funding and maintain high-quality research output.

Sedimentary units within the Olympic Dam deposit: Provenance and implications to metal sources (2016)$3,521
Description
Focussed on the Olympic Dam Cu-U-Au-Ag IOCG deposit in South Australia (approximately 500 km NW of Adelaide), this project aims to understand the genesis and potential sources of metals in the context of sedimentary units that occur within the breccia complex that hosts the deposit. The main objectives are to ascertain the provenance, relative timing and significance of the bedded sedimentary units through petrography, mineral and whole-rock geochemistry and geochronology of drill-core samples from the deposit. The inferred provenance and depositional timing of the sedimentary units can be used to elucidate potential metal sources and features of the genesis of the deposit.

High sensitivity and precision mass spectrometry for tracing Australia's ancient evolution and securing our future groundwater resources (2014)$360,000
Description
Micro-sampling Thermal Ionisation Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) provides the ability to undertake ultra lowlevelisotope analysis of earth and environmental samples. Analysis of radiogenic (e.g. Neodymium,Strontium and Lead) and stable (e.g. Boron) isotopes allows researchers to trace the evolution of theAustralian continent from its beginnings in the Precambrian through to the impacts of climate change in theQuaternary period (the last 2.6 million years). The proposed micro-sampling TIMS facility will giveresearchers the opportunity to characterize mineral deposit formation, paleoclimate records and groundwatersources with new levels of accuracy and precision. This will help secure the economic and environmentalfuture of Australia.

The supergiant Olympic Dam U-Cu-Au-REE ore deposit: towards a new genetic model (2013 - 2016)$468,608
Description
An understanding of metal sources and transport, combined with constraints on magmatic-tectonic framework and timing of different processes in the formation of the supergiant Olympic Dam deposit, is fundamental to the continual development of knowledge about the IOCG type of ore deposits. This project applies our expertise in petrology, geochemistry, volcanology, tectonics and radiometric dating to directly address chemical mechanisms, mechanical forces and heat sources contributing to and/or controlling extraction of ore constituents, and creating suitable sites for deposition. Evaluation of ore-forming metals and non-metallic components, of likely source rocks and magmas will be positioned in space and time.

An X-ray scattering facility for advanced characterisation of natural and novel materials (2013)$350,000

The aim of this proposal is to establish an X-ray analytical facility for characterisation of natural and novel materials using three complementary techniques: environmental powder X-ray diffraction, small angle X-ray scattering, and X-ray texture analysis. This facility will enable structural characterisation of engineered andgeological materials on length scales from 0.1 nm to 1 mm and under controlled conditions of temperature and atmospheric composition. This analytical facility will be used to support innovation in (1) design of novel materials for industrial, environmental and biomedical applications and (2) development of green technologies and processes for energy production and mining.

Kimberlites and Flood Basalts: Linking Primary Melts with Mantle and Crustal Sources (2010 - 2012)$105,000
Description
An understanding of mantle structure composition, temperature and melting is fundamental to the continued development of knowledge about mantle-derived magmas that form the Earth's crust and its economic resources. This project applies knowledge in the field of melt inclusion studies and state-of-the-art microanalytical techniques to directly address relationships between compositions of primary melts of small and large volume continental magmas, such as kimberlites and flood basalts, and their respective deep sources in the Earth. Major trace and volatile element compositions of continental melts will add to the understanding of possible recycled crustal components and their role in creating nonperidotitic mantle reservoirs.
