Jan van Moort (DSc Utrecht 1965 - petrology, mineral chemistry) is currently an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Physical Sciences (Discipline of Earth Sciences)

He commenced his career at the the University of Tasmania in 1965 and was involved in the setting up of the laboratories and courses in geochemistry in what was then the Geology Department. He was pivotal in securing the position of a departmental analyst. 

His  teaching duties other than geochemistry  were crystallography, mineralogy , geology for engineers and later spectroscopy in the Chemistry Department.

Over the course of his career he has supervised 10 PhD students and is currently involved in community engagement in the geology area.

His research interests were mainly in element mobility during weathering, diagenesis and wall rock alteration.  His interest in physical chemistry of minerals (mercury, nitrate deposits, magnetics) focusses at present on the formation of native metals by methane reduction.

Throughout his career he worked in close contact with the mining industry, CRC Leme and ANSTO through AINSE. He is an Humboldt Fellow (Gottingen, Heidelberg, Potsdam).

Chemistry of minerals associated with the occurrence of native metals (in Tasmania) (2014)$8,850
Description
Naturally occurring metal particles of Cu. Pb, Zn, Fe, Cr and have been observed in undisturbed greisens in north eastern Tasmania. Hundreds of these small native metal particles have been isolated and analysed by us by microprobe. Occurrences of native metals other than Cu are very rare, but scattered references occur in the literature. No comprehensive explanation exists although the need for reduction processes is acknowledged. This project proposes that the elements Cu, Pb, Fe, Zn and possibly Ni have been transported as chloro-complexes, fixed as sulphides and reduced to their native state by pneumatolyticihydrothermal methane reduction. Native Sn, Cr and AI are thought to be the result of more extreme post magmatic destruction of zinnwaldite (a dirty mica associated with Sn mineralisation) during methane pulses. This hypothesis is novel and requires substantiating by analysing the granitic zinnwaldite, in its various stages of decay, and by analysing associated quartz and its inclusions, including methane.
