Career Summary

Dr Russell D. Shaw graduated from The University of Sydney with a B.Sc. (Hons) in 1964. Over the next 35 years he worked as a regional geologist for the Bureau of Mineral Resources, known today as Geoscience Australia, mapping predominantly in Central and Northern Australia, and also in Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. During this time he instigated and led a small group that regionally mapped much of the exposed part of the Arunta Province. The project resulted in the rapid expansion of exploration and research in the Arunta region.

In 1999 he held the position of Principal Research Scientist with Australian Geological Survey Organisation (formerly BMR). During the period from 1999 to 2000 he was a visiting research scientist at the Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University, a renewed association, and then visited the University of Durham, United Kingdom and Dalhousie University, Halifax, NS, Canada. In 2000 he was invited to come the Department of Earth Sciences, University of Tasmanian.

He, along with Dr Alistair Stewart as senior author, was awarded the 2003 Stillwell Medal of the Geological Society of Australia for the paper 'The Arunta Inlier: a complex ensialic mobile belt in central Australia. Part 1 Stratigraphy, correlations and origin', one of two linked papers summarising the geology of the Arunta province. In 1996 he was awarded Golden Mouse Map Design Awards by the Intergraph Users Group for geological input into the Arltunga-Harts Range 1:100 000 map in 1984 and the Hermannsburg 1:250 000 map. His Master of Science from Imperial Collage, University of London, completed in 1976, included a thesis titled 'A comparison of quartz and carbonate deformation', which dealt with deformation mechanisms in rocks. His PhD from Research School of Earth Sciences, Australian National University, awarded in 1987, dealt with Uplift and Subsidence in Central Australia - the results provide constraints on basin-forming mechanisms. He has been a regular referee for the Geological Society of Australia. He is a member of the American Geophysical Union.
