This is Postdoc funding. This project will examine fundamental aspects of the laser ablation analytical method such as laser beam wavelength, laser pulse width and the geometry of the optical path, as the main influence on the generation of particulate aerosol when ablating natural mineral phases such as spinel group minerals and silicate minerals as olivine, plagioclase and pyroxene.

The establishment of ocean anoxia and ocean acidification during the PETM: Understanding the biological and chemical response on a regional and global scale. (2016)$20,000
Description
The Paleocene-Eocene Thermal Maximum (PETM; ~56 Ma) is one of the most intense and abrupt intervals of global warming in the entire geological record. The warming event has been linked to a rapid increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases in Earth's atmosphere, which acted to trap heat and increase global temperatures by more than 5 'C in just a few thousand years. Feedback from this event perpetrated the establishment on acid waters, leading to overturn of the carbonate compensation depth, and biological turnover.This project, funded by ANZIC-IODP, will sample and analyse cores from the Newfoundland shelf that archive the PETM. The project will utilise a range of organic and inorganic geochemical methods inorder to understand the conditions in the build-up and through the PETM
