Professor John Tisdell has over 20 years experience working on natural resource management issues in water and land conservation.  He is passionate about understanding how we can deal with the wicked questions associated with the changing climate and social world. He conducts economic experiments to explore human behaviour in complex common pool environments and models how interactions occur.

Biography

John holds the chair of Resource Economics at the University of Tasmania and is currently a visiting professor in the Department of Land Economy, Cambridge.  He has produced over 80 research papers and is a joint editor of the Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics. Prior to taking up his current position in Tasmania, he was an Associate Professor in the School of Environment at Griffith University, Brisbane. He has also held a number of senior external positions including the Deputy Director of the CRC for Catchment Hydrology, member of the Social Science network for UNESCO, Australia, and member of the Moreton Bay Scientific Advisory Board. These positions have required working with industry stakeholders on issues of global, national and regional importance. As a resource economist, he has research interests in the economic dimensions of climate change and terrestrial and marine management.

Research Themes

John's research aligns with the University's research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability.  He explores economic and social interactions in water and fishery management. He is studying how groups coordinate to avoid common pool resource problems and how game theory and optimisation models can be used to inform policy. In ecological economics he is interested in how steady state economies, proposed over twenty years ago, may play a role in modelling socially and environmental sustainable economic systems into the future.
