Jane Watson is Professor Emerita in the Faculty of Education, where she carries out research, mainly in the area of Statistics Education.

Career summary

Qualifications

  • PhD (1982) 'Individualised instruction in an Australian university', Kansas State University, USA
  • MA (1969), University of Oklahoma, USA
  • BA (1966), Sterling College, USA

Biography

Jane Watson came to the Australian National University on a Fulbright Scholarship from the University of Oklahoma, later working at the ANU as a Research Assistant for Professor Bernhard Neumann.

At the University of Tasmania she began as a tutor in the Mathematics Department. During her time there she completed a PhD in Mathematics Education and joined the Faculty of Education in 1985. She has taught many different courses in mathematics and mathematics education for primary, middle school and high school preservice teachers, as well as masters courses for inservice teachers.

She has supervised 11 PhD students to completion, been involved in 20 professional development programs and consultancies for teachers and education systems, and been a Chief Investigator on 20 large or small research projects funded by the Australian Research Council.

Research Themes

Jane's research aligns to the University's research theme of Creativity, Culture and Society. Since 1993 her research in the field of statistics education has evolved with constant ARC funding, beginning at a time when statistics was included in the school curriculum but virtually no research had been done on student understanding of statistical concepts. Beginning then, longitudinal data of students' understandings were collected for 10 years; concurrently other studies considered higher order statistical thinking when students worked in collaborative groups and the influence of cognitive conflict on students' statistical reasoning. From 2000 interest focused on the importance of variation in statistics and student understanding of the concept. Then interest turned to teachers and the professional development they needed in order to implement the curriculum given the results of research with students. This took place in a Linkage project with the Australian Bureau of Statistics and a software firm in the US. Later there was collaboration with Melbourne University on a project on teachers' interpretation of system data. Most recently focus has returned to the classroom with projects with QUT on beginning inference in Grades 4-6 and on data modelling in relation to STEM in Grades 3-6.

Other research projects with colleagues within the Faculty of Education have included 'Assessing and improving the mental computation of school aged-students' with Alistair MacIntosh and Rosemary Callingham, which resulted in a book reporting on the multiple perspectives of the topic and the research; 'Providing the mathematical foundation for an innovative Australia within reform-based learning environments', involving professional development of teachers and assessment of change in their students, with Kim Beswick and Natalie Brown, which resulted in a book reporting positive change but including issues arising when reform-based learning environments themselves disappear mid-project; and 'Student retention beyond the compulsory schooling years in rural, regional and disadvantaged communities' with Ian Hay, Kim Beswick, Neil Cranston, and Jeanne Allen, a Linkage project growing out of increasing concern about retention rates for students beyond Year 10, particularly in rural and remote communities of Tasmania.

Teaching

Teaching expertise

Although no longer teaching, Jane taught many Mathematics Education units in the BEd, BTeach, MTeach, and MEd programs in the Faculty from 1985. The federally funded project, 'Curriculum Development Project in Teacher Education – Mathematics,' which she led with Helen Chick, who was in the Mathematics Department at the time, won the first University of Tasmania Teaching Excellence Award in the team category (for Mathematics and Education) in 1993.

From 1996 to 2001, she had 3 UTAS Teaching Development Grants to develop multimedia applications in masters units. In 2004 Jane was presented with a Faculty of Education Mentoring Award for Excellence in Professional Support of Students. The final unit she developed in 2011 was 'Personal and Professional Numeracy', for all beginning BEd and MTeach students in the Education Faculty, a Foundation unit taught on-campus on 3 campuses and externally via MyLO to over 700 students. The paper reporting on the unit in the international journal, Numeracy: Advancing Education in Quantitative Literacy, has created great interest and had 1436 downloads to May, 2015. She was a member of the Mathematics Education Team in the Faculty that won a 2011 Vice-Chancellor's Award for Outstanding Contribution to Teaching and Learning: Award for Teaching Excellence and a 2012 Australian Government Office for Learning and Teaching Australian Awards for University Teaching: Award for Teaching Excellence in the Social Sciences.

Grants & Funding

The newest ARC Discovery project (with Prof Lyn English and Dr Noleine Fitzallen) is significant nationally due to the perceived need to strengthen and lift the nation's skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Diminishing enrolments in Mathematics and Science at high school are seen as symptomatic of the problem, along with disappointing results in international testing programs for Australian students. The Australian Chief Scientist and other industry groups claim it is 'time for a major re-think by Australian education at all levels to address the situation' in order for Australia to compete internationally in these fields in the 21st century. The project, 'Modelling with Data: Enhancing STEM in the Primary Curriculum,' aims to increase primary school students' interest in and understanding of STEM topics by providing motivating activities based on collecting evidence from data. Building on the years of previous research in statistics education, expanded contexts for hands-on investigations are intended to create interest and excitement about learning more Science, Technology and Engineering. Students will be followed for 4 years (grades 3 to 6) and the outcomes used to make suggestions for The Australian Curriculum to enhance integration of the subjects.

Modelling with data: Advancing STEM in the primary curriculum (2015 - 2018)$603,900
Description
Improving the nations skills in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) remains acontinuing concern, especially given the decline in international test results. The project will introduce a newapproach to promoting this learning across grades 3-6 through modelling with data. With a focus on inquiryprocesses involving data variation and uncertainty within STEM-based contexts, the project will develop theimportant mathematical and statistical literacies needed for lifting student achievements. In advancing boththeory and practice, the project will contribute to knowledge of primary students capabilities for STEMproblem solving and ways of enhancing implementation of the Australian Curriculum.

Student retention beyond the compulsory schooling years in rural, regional and disadvantaged communities (2011 - 2014)$384,098
Description
Increased retention of Australian students beyond the compulsory years of schooling is fundamental to improving the skills and capacity of our youth, to lifting the nations educational ranking among OECD countries and, ultimately, to raising Australias productivity and the health and well-being of its people. This longitudinal mixed-methods study draws on expertise from university and industry partners to investigate factors that influence student retention in rural, regional and disadvantaged areas. Located in Tasmania, the research aims to discover best educational practice to enhance retention in schooling in these regions, drawing on and contributing to both national and international research.
