Dr Andy Bown is a language teaching professional with over 20 years' experience as a language teacher, department manager, and educational technology specialist. He worked in the UK, France, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates before joining the University of Tasmania as a lecturer in 2015. He speaks French and Thai and is interested in all areas of language education.

Biography

After graduating with a BA(Hons) in French and Linguistics from the University of York in the UK, Andy began his teaching career in Thailand, where he taught English at British-American Language Institute, Stamford College and Sripatum University. He then moved to France, where he taught English and developed courses for Executive Language Services in Paris. In 1999 Andy moved to the United Arab Emirates, where he worked as a language teacher, academic coordinator, ITS and Educational technology supervisor, and English Language/Foundations program chair for the Higher Colleges of Technology in Ras Al Khaimah. During this time, Andy graduated with a MEd in Educational Technology and ELT from the University of Manchester (UK), and began work on a PhD in Applied Linguistics, with a focus on computer-assisted second language reading instruction at Macquarie University in Sydney. Shortly after submitting his PhD thesis, Andy joined UTAS as a lecturer in languages/TESOL.

Research Themes

Andy's research aligns to the University's research theme of Creativity, Culture and Society. His research interests include examining the use of technology in language teaching and learning, with a particular emphasis on second language reading. His recent PhD research focused on the use of a virtual learning environment to support the development of L2 academic reading in a Middle-Eastern context, and he is planning to expand this by exploring the issue in other Asian contexts.
