Ralph is a Professor of English in the School of Humanities at the University of Tasmania. He has particular interests in colonial and postcolonial fictions and the intersections of literature and geography.

Biography

Ralph worked in New Zealand universities for fourteen years before taking up his current position at the University of Tasmania in 2004. He has degrees from the University of Wales, Swansea, the University of Victoria, Canada, and the University of Tasmania. He has written or edited over 20 books, as well as numerous book chapters, and refereed journal articles. He regularly presents his work at conferences, and has co-convened five international conferences. His most recent book Cave: Nature and Culture (Reaktion, 2015) is co-authored with Lisa Fletcher (University of Tasmania).

Expertise

Ralph's main research interests are in the fields of Colonial and Postcolonial literatures and literature and the environment.  In particular he is interested in Anglo-Indian (Raj) fiction, Indian English fiction, the fiction of J.G. Farrell, and the intersections between literature and geography.

Research Themes

Ralph's research aligns with the University's research theme of Creativity, Culture and Society.

Collaboration

Ralph regularly collaborates with colleagues in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK. He is currently working on several co-authored projects with his UTAS colleague Lisa Fletcher.

Current projects

Oxford History of the Novel in English, Vol 9, The World Novel to 1950 (co-edited with Jane Stafford and Mark Williams, Victoria University of Wellington)

Commissioned by Oxford University Press, this book is part of a 12-volume series presenting a comprehensive, global, and up-to-date history of the English-language novel.

Island Genres, Genre Islands (with Lisa Fletcher, University of Tasmania)

The first volume in Rowman and Littlefield's Rethinking the Island series, this book will, for the first time, show the deep impact of popular fiction genres on the conceptualisation and representation of islands in contemporary Western culture.

Picturing the Empire: Illustration and Popular Fiction in the Victorian Age (with Lisa Fletcher, University of Tasmania)

This project explores the relationship between written text and image in Victorian literature and popular culture. In particular it considers the role of illustrators and illustrations in the production of text. Three journal articles/chapters have been published to date, with a monograph planned in the long-term.

Publications

Ralph has over 150 cumulative publications, including  more than 20 books, as well as numerous book chapters, refereed journal articles, conference papers, and essays in reference books. He has a strong record of research collaboration, and has co-authored or co-edited various publications with colleagues in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK.

Ralph currently serves on the Editorial Boards of three international journals: Journal of Commonwealth Literature; Journal of Postcolonial Writing; and The Atlantic Critical Review. He is General Editor of Oxford University Press's series of 'Lesser-known Raj Novels'.
