P.B.McQuillan@utas.edu.au

Peter is intrigued by the interactions between plants and invertebrates, including pollination ecology, herbivory and the ecology of invasive pests. He has worked on a wide variety of research projects including exotic bumble bees in Tasmania and the management of our undervalued native bees.

He is especially interested in the use of invertebrates as indicators of environmental change in natural environments as well as cities and farms.

His particular passions include moths, beetles and ants, and he has made a substantial contribution to the biogeography, conservation and systematics of Lepidoptera and Coleoptera.

Along with his undergraduate and postgraduate students, Peter works on a wide range of biodiversity and conservation challenges that involve Tasmania’s outstanding invertebrate fauna and its role in the environment.

Teaching Responsibilities

Peter's teaching largely reflects his research interests. At 2nd year level Peter teaches into KGA204 Earth, Climate and Life and KGA213 Natural Environment Field Techniques. In 3rd year he teaches KGA332 Conserving Nature in Landscapes, and into the KGA516 Ecosystem Conservation unit within the postgraduate program. Peter supervise a number of Honours, Masters and PhD students who share his research interests. As well as locally, some students have had the opportunity to undertake fieldwork in Papua New Guinea, Thailand and India.

Projects

Systematics and biogeography of the Australian scoparline moths (Lepidoptera: Crambidae: Scopariinae) (2014 - 2016)$30,000
Description
This project will modernise our understanding of the biosystematics, functional ecology, distribution and conservation status of an important but neglected group of the Australian fauna. Scopariine moths are among least studied fauna and are associated with unusual foodplants: such as mosses, lichens, lycopods and some seed plants. Using modern methods, the project will revise the 83 known species and describe at least 20 new species. Using morphological and molecular DNA approaches, analysis will elucidate the history and broader relationships of the group in Australia. The conservation status of scopariine moths is very poorly known. This study will elucidate their distribution and biology while access to historical collections in museums will indicate former ranges occupied. On this basis, it will be possible to make informed decisions regarding their conservation status. While alpine species are probably adequately conserved some lowland species have suffered large range contractions, alerting us to possible conservation needs. The implications of projected climate change will be considered via biogeographical modelling. Methods and progress will be calibrated against contemporary international standards. The project will produce identification tools in the form of an interactive Lucid key to the Australian genera and species of Scopariinae, as well as diagnostic digital images of adults and larvae where available.
