Using exercise to improve the health of Tasmanian caregivers (2016)$7,274
Description
This project tests whether weekly exercise/gym sessions improve the health of carers of children with autism and the motor skills of their child. This project has three objectives:1) to improve the physical health and mental well-being of caregivers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) througha 12 week exercise program2) to provide an expedited motor skills assessment process for children (2-5 years) with ASD3) to identify caregiver friendly strategies that can assist in developing and improving the motor skills of children with ASD

Exercise Physiology in Practice: Development of an Evidence Based Practice Network (2016 - 2018)$116,925
Description
This study aims to: 1) investigate the effectiveness of services provided by Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) using the model of type II diabetes (T2DM) in a primary practice situation on (i) sustained participation in physical activity and (ii) surrogate markers of clinical prognosis such as cardiovascular and metabolic risk in each client; 2) estimate the association between different levels of participation and surrogate markers of clinical prognosis (dose-response); 3) estimate the relative cost-effectiveness of different frequencies of attendance; and 4) establish a methodology for regular surveillance of practice effectiveness. Clients with T2DM will be recruited for this study to one of ten university sites throughout Australia that regularly treat T2DM clients.

TAZREACH Promoting Health Through Understanding (2015)$25,647
Description
This project will be funded through TAZREACH and seeks to address a gap in service delivery by providing a bundle of sessions designed to increase the health literacy of the participants. The sessions focus on issues pertinent to chronic disease prevention and self-management including: nutrition, physical activity, communicating with health service providers, and goal setting. Health professionals are well-placed to assist clients with low HL through education, advocacy and support, thus improving health outcomes. These sessions will be provided by health professionals from UTAS with the support of undergraduate students wherever possible.

Research Supervision

Dr Williams has supervised a number of HDR (PhD and Masters by Research) candidates to completion, as well as numerous Honours students. Many of his candidates have been the recipient of Australian Postgraduate Awards and other Scholarships to support their candidature.

Students who are potentially interested in working in the Exercise Research Group should contact Dr Andrew Williams (Andrew.Williams@utas.edu.au), and include a detailed CV, as well as a description of the type of research that they would like to undertake. Potential HDR students should have a relevant Bachelor's degree (with Honours), or Masters by Research degree, with peer-reviewed publications.
