Dr Elaine Crisp is a lecturer at the School of Health Sciences in the Faculty of Health. She is a Registered Nurse, with a professional background in aged care and perioperative nursing. Her research interests include nursing history, social history, qualitative research methodologies, aged care, and dementia.

Before taking her Nursing degree, Elaine worked as an administration manager in a variety of areas in the public and private sector, including hospitality, chartered accountancy, IT, and local government. She is also a qualified beauty and massage therapist, and ran her own practice in Sydney for many years.
After gaining her Bachelor of Nursing in 2006, Elaine undertook an Honours year researching the use of restraints in aged care, working as an RN in the sector. She then completed a Graduate Nurse Transition program with Calvary Health Care, and remained with them afterwards, working in the peri-operative area.
Elaine returned to the University of Tasmania to do her PhD, a historical exploration of the development of aged care in Tasmania, during which time she tutored in many units of the BN and in several postgraduate units.
Elaine is currently a lecturer with the School of Health Sciences, and is also involved in several collaborative and individual research projects, including the Teaching Aged Care Facilities program with the Wicking Dementia Research & Education Centre, and an ongoing oral history of nurse training at the Launceston General Hospital.
Elaine's research aligns to the University's research theme of Better Health. She has worked primarily in three different but interlinked fields of nursing research: age care and dementia, nursing history, and nurse education.
In conjunction with the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre, Elaine has been involved in the Teaching Aged Care Facilities project, which aims to promote and improve learning opportunities for healthcare students in aged care settings. Given the aging of Australia's population and the shortage of Registered Nurses in this sector, it is vital that more nurses choose to work in aged care; the TACF program is intended to make this choice a more likely one for our new graduates.
Elaine's PhD research examined the development of aged care and aged care nursing, particularly in the Tasmanian context. In her most current project, Elaine and colleagues are researching the history and development of nurse training and education in Tasmania. Apart from the desire to preserve this record for posterity, this research will also help to inform current and future nurse education methods and design.

Elaine has extensive administrative experience from previous positions in management, including running her own successful small business for many years.
Elaine currently coordinates the Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) program. A key aim of this program is to provide clinically focused research opportunities for nursing honours students through the creation of partnerships and the promotion of cross disciplinary research within the university and clinical setting.

Elaine is involved in the Teaching Aged Care Facilities Project with the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre.
A history of nurse education in Northern Tasmania: ongoing research project recording the development of nurse training and education from the implementation of formal training at the Launceston General Hospital in 1890.
An exhibition based on this project will open at the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in October 2015, to run until February 2016. This is tied to the 125th Anniversary celebration of the University.

Elaine has published several papers based on the Teaching Aged Care Facilities Program, highlighting the experiences of students in the program and outcomes from this. She has also presented papers at several national and international conferences and forums drawing on her PhD research into the history of aged care.

Elaine is currently supervising three PhD candidates, in the fields of health policy, child & family health, and nurse education. She is also supervising a candidate in the University's Doctor of Health program, exploring the Sub-acute sector. Elaine is particularly interested in supervising HDR candidates who have a historical aspect to their project, whether as the main focus of the study or as an underpinning.
