Epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the lungs and airways in Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) (2018)$43,958
Description
IPF is a highly destructive lethal disease of the lungs, but with very little information available on the underlying mechanisms. We are going to explore the process of epithelial cell plasticity (or EMT) and a similar process in blood vessel endothelium (Endo-MT). This work will lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of this nasty lung condition. The project brings together well-characterized patients from the Australian IPF registry, blood samples we have collected from them and innovative techniques to reset thinking about the underlying pathological processes active in this illness.

Impact of cherry anthocyanins on gout and inflammation (2017 - 2018)$55,955
Description
This project funds are to assess attenuation of inflammation and disease symptoms through two different models. One is to identify the impact of sweet cherry anthocyanins on markers of gout. The second is to investigate the effect of sweet cherry anthocyanins on acute, exercise-induced inflammation in humans.

Mobile Solution to Encourage Clients to Exercise at Home (2016)$5,523
Description
The aim of the project is to engage clients in home exercise programs to improve their rehabilitation outcomes, through the development of a targeted smart phone application with individualised exercises, diary and interface with clinicians. The application will allow the clinician to take a video of the client performing exercises on their own phone, which they can then refer to when completing the exercises at home to ensure they are doing them correctly. A diary component of the application will allow the dose to be set and allow adherence to exercise to be monitored remotely by the clinician. The application will make it easier for the clinician to monitor and supervise exercise between visits, with flow on benefits to the clients progress.

A study to investigate cigarette smoking and alcohol consumption among a cohort of refugees in Tasmania (2016)$6,729
Description
: Smoking and alcohol consumption among refugees are complex issues that require a cross-disciplinary research approach. Our collaboration brings sociological/criminological researchers with expertise in migrant health and criminal justice, conducting research among vulnerable populations, smoking and cross-disciplinary mixed methods research together with a research psychologist and biomedical scientist who both have expertise in conducting medical research (including smoking research), biostatistics and clinical trials.

Poor Diet and Nutrition, Food Security and Obesity Healthy Eating Local Mapping and Local Solutions Project (2013 - 2015)$350,000
Description
The key objectives of the proposed project are to: 1) build a comprehensive understanding of the healthy (with particular emphasis on fruit and vegetables) and unhealthy food choices available in communities across Tasmania; 2) build understanding of possible barriers to eating well considering the Environments for Health domains of the social, built, economic and natural environments across Tasmania; 3) build understanding of how connecting local growers to local communities through new economic opportunities may increase the amount of healthy local fresh affordable food available where people live, work and play; 4) provide the findings of the research to local governments and other critical stakeholders to encourage and support their future work around improving health and wellbeing outcomes with particular emphasis on the social determinants of health; 5) develop a methodology and tools that could be used for future monitoring and surveillance of healthy food access.
