Biography

Dr Cecilia Kitic is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and Senior Lecturer in Exercise Science within the School of Health Sciences at the University of Tasmania researching in the area of Nutrition and Exercise in Health and Chronic Disease. As Director of the Sport Performance Optimisation Research Team (SPORT) Dr Kitic's work focuses on the associated molecular and system level alterations to provide mechanistic explanations of performance change, with a primary interest in inflammation and gut health.

Dr Kitic's research has been presented at over 35 national and major, high-profile international conferences (American College of Sports Medicine Conference, European College of Sports Science Meeting, American Society of Nephrology Renal Week) as both invited speaker and podium presentations. As an integral member of her professional association Dr Kitic has previously held the position of the Tasmanian Chapter and Rural and Remote Committee Representative of Exercise & Sports Science Australia (2008-2014) and is a member of the International Society of Exercise Immunology.

Before joining the University of Tasmania in 2007 Dr Cecilia Kitic completed her undergraduate and postgraduate studies in Human Movement and Exercise Immunology at the University of Queensland (Australia).

Exercise Physiology in Practice: Development of an Evidence Based Practice Network (2016 - 2018)$116,925
Description
This study aims to: 1) investigate the effectiveness of services provided by Accredited Exercise Physiologists (AEPs) using the model of type II diabetes (T2DM) in a primary practice situation on (i) sustained participation in physical activity and (ii) surrogate markers of clinical prognosis such as cardiovascular and metabolic risk in each client; 2) estimate the association between different levels of participation and surrogate markers of clinical prognosis (dose-response); 3) estimate the relative cost-effectiveness of different frequencies of attendance; and 4) establish a methodology for regular surveillance of practice effectiveness. Clients with T2DM will be recruited for this study to one of ten university sites throughout Australia that regularly treat T2DM clients.

Podiums are better than pulmonary thromboembolisms? Health risks associated with prolonged travel in athletes (2014)$10,000
Description
This study will compare pre- to post-travel markers of activation of blood clots (coagulation), in a cohort of highly trained athletes with an age matched control group. Endurance sport athletes and healthy controls (matched for age, gender, BMI and oral contraceptive use) will have blood samples collected 24 hours before undertaking long haul travel between Australia and Europe and then again after arrival, pre- and post- a standardised bout of endurance exercise, for analysis of changes in activation of the coagulation system. These markers will be used to establish a level of risk for coagulation and associated adverse events in this population during training or competition after travel. This study will provide original research into the thrombotic risk for highly trained athletes engaging in prolonged air travel.

Impact of dietary gluten on gastrointestinal distress and overall well-being in non-coeliac athletes (2013)$4,000
Description
This double-blind cross-over pilot study aims to determine the impact of a short-term (1-wk) GFD in non-coeliac and non-gluten sensitive athletes (NCA) on: 1) self-reported GI function; and 2) well-being determined by a daily analysis of life demands (DALDA) questionnaire. The project hypothesizes that a GFD will not affect GI stress or daily well-being in non-coeliac, non-gluten sensitive athletes.

Description
This study aims to determine the impact of a short-term gluten free diet in non-coeliac athletes on intestinal permeability, systemic inflammation, metabolomic profiles, self-reported GI function, perceptual status and exercise performance. It hypothisizes that a GFD will not improve exercise performance or the above parameters effecting performance in NCA.
