Biography

Professor Byrne graduated with a Bachelor of Human Movement Studies from the University of Queensland before completing a Master of Applied Science (Research) and PhD in the field of exercise physiology and energy metabolism at QUT. Nuala undertook a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Department of Nutrition Sciences, Division of Physiology and Metabolism, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) before returning to Australia in 2002. She held the roles of Clinic Director and then Discipline Lead - Exercise and Movement Science in the School of Human Movement Studies (later the School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences) at QUT. In her final years at QUT Nuala was the Domain Leader (Human Health and Wellbeing) in the Institute of Health and Biomedical Innovation. In 2014 Nuala was recruited to Bond University as Head of Program (Exercise and Sports Science) and Director of the Collaborative Research Network for Advancing Exercise and Sports Science (CRN-AESS).

Nuala is an Accredited Exercise Physiologist and has held leadership roles in various professional bodies. From 2009-2011 she was President of the Australia and New Zealand Obesity Society. She has participated in various Science in Parliament and Science Meets Parliament events to communicate with media, policymakers and parliamentarians the value of science in informing solutions to national health issues. Nuala was invited to provide evidence to the House of Representatives Standing Committee on Health and Ageing for the Inquiry into Obesity in Australia, and was a member of the NHMRC committee to develop an implementation plan for the Guidelines for the Management of Overweight and Obesity in Adults, Adolescents and Children. She has held research consultancies with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) based on her expertise in the use of stable isotopes in energy metabolism research and has regularly served on NHMRC Grant Review Panels (GRPs). She was invited to serve on the NHMRC Assigners Academy for 2016.
