Dr Kelvin Michael is a physical scientist with research interests in the measurement and modelling of solar radiation processes in marine and Antarctic environments, including the application and interpretation of various forms of remotely-sensed data.

Biography

Kelvin completed a science degree (physics and mathematics) at the University of Tasmania (1980-1982), and completed Honours in the field of radio astronomy (1983). He completed a PhD in climatology and remote sensing (1984-1988) in the School of Geography & Environmental Studies of the University of Tasmania.Kelvin worked for the Defence Science and Technology Organisation in the fields of ionospheric radar observations and ocean radar surveillance (1987-1990). He then returned to the University of Tasmania as a lecturer in the Institute of Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies, which was subsumed into IMAS on its creation in 2010.

Projects

Physical, chemical and biogeochemical gradients in the East Australian Current (2018)$0
Description
This voyage will train Masters students from the University of Tasmania in oceanographic methods. Students will map changes in temperature, salinity and nutrients along 2,500 km of the eastern Australian coast. Biological sampling will document the changes in ocean plankton from the subantarctic waters near Tasmania to the tropics. By observing the change in current biological communities along a south-to-north temperature gradient, students will gain an appreciation of changes that may occur over time due to climate change. Students will gain valuable training in oceanographic field techniques, data analysis and communication.
