Dr Nicole Hill is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. Her research spans a range of applied marine ecology topics including; ectoxicology, quantifying human impacts, modelling biodiversity and developing monitoring programs. Nicole's recent  research focusses on understanding, quantifying and mapping biodiversity to support decision making in the marine environment, and she currently leads a project that is applying novel statistical methods to model and map marine biodiversity in Antarctica.

Biography

Dr Hill is a quantitative ecologist who completed her PhD at UNSW in 2010 investigating the ecological impacts of metal-contaminated sediments on temperate and Antarctic benthic communities. Her previous research also includes examining the ecological implications of translocating sea urchins as a fisheries tool, and the ecological, genetic, and historical constraints on host-algal choices by marine herbivores. More recently, Nicole was a postdoctoral researcher in the CERF/ NERP Marine Biodiversity Hub where her research focussed on using new survey tools and applying sophisticated statistical techniques to understand and predict patterns of marine biodiversity at a range of scales, and on the logistical and statistical challenges in developing long-term monitoring programs in offshore waters. This work is being applied to assist spatial conservation management, to assist the development of a blueprint for monitoring of the Commonwealth's Marine Reserve Network, and to enable a better understanding of the distribution of key fish species and overall fish diversity in Tasmanian waters.

Collaboration

Nicole has developed collaborations with statisticians, ecologists, polar biologists and environmental chemists from a range of national and international institutions. As part of her work with the Marine Biodiversity Hub, Nicole collaborated with researchers from CSIRO, Geoscience Australia, The University of Sydney and the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage. She continues many of these collaborations in her current project that aims to quantify and predict Antarctic marine biodiversity. In addition, she has established new collaborations with researchers at the Australian Antarctic Division, the University of Pierre et Marie Curie and the Museum National D'Historie Natural in Paris, and the University of Genoa in Italy.

Current projects

Quantification and prediction of marine biodiversity at a range of geographical and ecological scales for spatial protection and management (Australian Antarctic Science Grant):

Antarctic marine ecosystems face increasing pressure from a range of sources including pollution, fishing, invasive species and a changing climate. Integral to our ability to protect biodiversity and predict how it may be affected by future scenarios, is a robust understanding of current patterns in the spatial distribution of biodiversity and how these patterns relate to environmental drivers. However, biological data is expensive and difficult to collect, particularly in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica, and inevitably results in sparse and patchily distributed datasets. Predictive modelling is an approach that maximises the value of these datasets, addressing both the spatial distribution of diversity and the influence of environmental drivers. The project will apply cutting-edge statistical techniques, recently been developed to tackle similar issues in continental Australian waters, for modelling biodiversity in the Southern Ocean and Antarctica

Tasmania's coastal reefs: significance for finfish production and biodiversity and the importance of deep reef areas (Fisheries Research and Development Corporation Grant):In Tasmania, shallow reefs are significant to commercial and recreational fisheries for scalefish and invertebrates. While the structure, composition, and functioning of shallow-reefs and their associated fish communities has been studied extensively, the ecological importance of deeper reef ecosystems has not been investigated apart from recent baseline studies of offshore Commonwealth marine protected areas. Linkages and associations between fish communities in shallow and deeper reef areas remain a distinct knowledge gap. This project seeks to apply a variety of techniques including habitat mapping, underwater video surveys, catch sampling and modelling to address this gap in our understanding.

FRANCE-AUSTRALIA SCIENCE INNOVATION COLLABORATION (FASIC) PROGRAM EARLY CAREER FELLOWSHIPS: Predicting Antarctic Marine Biodiversity for Conservation and Management (2014)$5,000
Description
This project aims to build networks with collaborators at French Institutions to quantify and predict marine biodiversity at a range of geographical and ecological scales for spatial protection and management. Outcomes will include a better understanding of the types, availability and holdings of Antarctic datasets relevant to the AAS project and a stronger and more productive relationship with international collaborators.
