As aquaculture industries expand across the globe, one challenge is rising to the top: fish health. The cost associated with fish deaths and the prevention of fish loss can be high.

Improving fish health

Professor Barbara Nowak, an expert in aquatic animal health, is working with the international aquaculture industry to solve the problems of common farmed fish diseases.

'I work specifically with finfish. My research is concerned with determining whether fish are healthy, and if not, why not. Most importantly we want to know what we can do about it,' said Professor Nowak.

Professor Nowak led a collaborative project to solve the problem of blood flukes in the bluefin tuna industry. Their findings were adopted by the industry and reduced bluefin tuna mortality in the Australian industry from 12% to below 1%.

'We developed a method to detect blood flukes in bluefin tuna, in collaboration with Japanese and Australian scientists, uncovered a new species and intermediate host, and we developed a treatment,' she said. 'The industry got us champagne!'

Professor Nowak is currently working closely with the international Atlantic salmon farming industry, seeking similar results for amoebic gill disease. The Launceston-based lab has discovered the parasite that causes the disease, determined the effects of the parasite, and developed research methods.

'The parasite causes gill lesions. As a result, it becomes much harder for the fish to exchange gasses with the external environment,' said Professor Nowak.

'If the disease becomes serious enough, the fish no longer has the ability to expel CO2 and take in oxygen and the fish dies.'

The cost of prevention is still high, accounting for 20% of production, adding $1.25 per kilo to the final cost of Atlantic salmon production in Tasmania.

'There are immediate returns from our work to the aquaculture industry, but funding is still a significant challenge,' said Professor Nowak.

The University of Tasmania facilities and team in Launceston studying fish health are world leading and internationally renowned.

'We have a great aquaculture facility for experimenting with fish, good laboratory infrastructure, and the expertise to do it,' she said.

Professor Nowak is sought after as a conference speaker, invited to give keynote presentations around three times per year, and has won a number of awards. Her expertise, and that of her colleagues, is also sought for a range of other applications where the health of fish is an issue.

'Fish health is a significant indicator of pollution in the marine environment. The effect of pollution on fish health is often an issue for industry, who want to mitigate the impacts of their activities.'

Professor Nowak has been called on to determine safe levels of contaminants in effluent from mining, agriculture, pulp mills and other sources.

As much as she loves the sound of champagne corks popping after an internationally significant discovery, Professor Nowak's favourite thing is graduation ceremonies.

'I love seeing successful PhD students graduate. In the last five years, four of our students were awarded the Rob Lewis Medal (as the best AMC PhD graduates) and recognised as giving the best presentations at international conferences. It is great to see their hard work being acknowledged and it is something that I am very proud of.'

Professor Barbara Nowak is internationally renowned for her research in aquatic animal health, specifically finfish. Her background is in aquatic toxicology, in particular the biological significance of chemical residues in fish, and fish biology. Professor Nowak's current research is concerned with the health of farmed fish with a focus on the interaction between host, pathogen and the environment. In particular her research is concerned with disease control and investigation of fish mortalities. The research has had significant impact improving aquaculture production and sustainability.

Research Themes

Barbara's research aligns to the University's Marine, Antarctic and Maritime and Environment, Resources and Sustainability research themes. Fish health can be investigated as an aspect of sustainable aquaculture and fisheries or as an indicator of environmental pollutionSome aspects of research on sustainability of aquaculture include management of parasitic diseases, including changes in husbandry and novel treatments. Health management also includes development of vaccines. Methods used to determine fish health have been successfully applied to aquatic toxicology. Research on fish parasites leads to discovery and description of new species which contributes to biodiversity.

Blood flukes in Southern Bluefin Tuna (2015 - 2017)$21,000
Description
Based on its value Southern Bluefin Tuna (SBT) industry is one of the most important fish producedin Australia. It is based on ranching 2-3year old wild SBT. Blood flukes Cardicola forsteri and Cardicola orientalis are the most significant health issues for ranched SBT (Hardy-Smith et al 2012, Polinski et al 2013). This project will focus on those blood flukes. Currently, the infection can be assessed using heart flushes and direct count of blood flukes under a microscope. This is very time consuming and requires working with fresh samples, thus limiting the number of fish which can be processed at any one time. As a result it is difficult to accurately monitor the dynamics of infection to assess effects of treatments or other husbandry strategies.

Investigating the impact of nutrition, in-feed bioactive compounds and environment on gut and gill microbial population dynamics and histology in farmed Atlantic salmon (2014 - 2015)$103,325
Description
Various papers in the literature have researched microbial populations in the gut and gills of farmed Atlantic salmon and their relationship to fish health. Research has included overt conditions such as Summer Gut Syndrome and AGD. However, there is also growing interest internationally on more subtle aspects of the impact of microbial populations on gut, gill and general fish health and production performance. This is an area of investigation that Huon and a number of industry collaborators are particularly interested in. A program of research on this topic will help to better understand the impact of nutrition, in-feed bioactive compounds and environment on gut and gill microbial populations and associated histology.

Establishment of a digital transmission electron microscopy facility (2014)$380,000
Description
Transmission electron microscopy is a fundamental tool for the study of biological systems at the ultrastructural level. Tasmania has only one, aged and barely functioning electron microscopy facility. This proposal is to establish a State-wide facility that will be accessible to a range of biological researchers across Tasmania, as well as the CSIRO and Antarctic Division. The proposed instrument will be established in new purpose-built laboratory space in the UTAS Medical Sciences Precinct, and will be supported by the Central Science Laboratory. The instrument will revitalise cellular research in Tasmania, and provide additional insights and outcomes related to the study of intracellular features in a diverse range of systems and models.

Commercial development of rock lobster culture systems: the cutting edge of aquaculture (2012 - 2017)$7,500,000
Description
Researchers will partner with industry to develop innovative aquaculture technology to produce rock lobsters. Lobsters are a valuable and sought after seafood in expanding markets. Current supply relies on wild stocks, many of which are in decline. Previous research has already solved key bottlenecks in production of three species. The project will develop sophisticated culture systems, using unique engineering, state-of-the art hatcheries and plastic manufacturing. Commercial opportunities will result for Australian companies in an international, multi-million dollar aquaculture venture which aims at sustainable food production. Australia will benefit from more sustainable wild fisheries enhanced through the release of seed lobsters.

Optimising Prawn Nutrition (2010 - 2013)$37,131
Description
This project provides an assessment of bioactive feed ingredients and immunostimulants to improve prawn health and growth performance. The project seeks to identify potential bioactive ingredients for use as feed supplements or nutrient sources that lower disease-related stress and provide enhanced growth performance in black tiger prawns (Penaeus monodon) when faced with challenge from viral or bacterial pathogens.

Optimising Prawn Nutrition for growth performance under suboptimal conditions (2010 - 2014)$81,796
Description
The overall aim of this project is to improve our understanding of prawn (black tiger prawn, Penaeus monodon) nutrition during suboptimal conditions. During late stages of prawn production, farms are often subject to high rainfall events which rapidly reduce both salinity and temperature for extended periods of time. Prawn growth rates are reduced when exposed to suboptimal water quality for a range of reasons including changed feeding patterns and stress to animals.
