Associate Professor Hurd studies seaweed physiological ecology, i.e. the physiological responses of seaweeds to their abiotic and biotic environment. In 2015, she won the Phycological Society of America's Gerald Prescott award for her co-authored text book Seaweed Ecology and Physiology 2ndedition (Cambridge University Press).  She has supervised to completion > 45 postgraduate students, the majority of whom have pursued careers as research scientists.

Biography

Associate Professor Hurd completed her BSc (Hons) in Marine Biology at the University of Liverpool (UK), specialising on how environment factors control seaweed morphology - an interest that she has maintained since.  Catriona's PhD on nutrient uptake and zonation of intertidal seaweeds was done at Queen's University of Belfast (Northern Ireland).  She then became a postdoctoral researcher at the University of British Columbia and Bamfield Marine Station (Canada).  Here she became interested in hydrodynamics, and studied how seaweed morphology interacts with seawater flow to modulate nitrogen acquisition.  In 1995, she became a lecturer at the University of Otago, New Zealand, and focussed on nitrogen uptake and antioxidant metabolism in relation to the zonation of intertidal seaweeds, seaweed productivity and its fate in coastal food webs, the invasive seaweed Undaria, and most recently ocean acidification.  Catriona started at IMAS in 2013.

Research Themes

Associate Professor Hurd's research aligns with the University's research theme of Marine, Antarctic and Maritime. Seaweeds form the base of temperate coastal ecosystems worldwide, providing food and habitat to higher trophic levels.  Her research focuses on how physical (water motion), chemical (carbon, nitrogen supply) and biological (invertebrates) interactions affect seaweed production, including the impacts of global (e.g. ocean acidification and UV-radiation) and local (invasive seaweeds and nutrient enrichment) drivers of coastal productivity.  This type of research has become particularly relevant over the past 20 years as awareness grows of how rapid environmental changes can affect seaweeds as individuals and communities, and alter the functioning of coastal ecosystems.

Publications

Associate Professor Hurd has published 90 peer-reviewed articles on seaweed physiological ecology, and a text book Seaweed Ecology and Physiology (2nd edition, 2015).   Hurd (2000) is a synthetic review of how water motion affects seaweed productivity which has been cited > 200 times. 

She is also Associate Editor for the Journal of Phycology; Associate Editor for Botanica Marina, and Contributing Editor for Marine Ecology Progress Series.

Associate Professor Hurd has led the Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden funded project 'Ocean acidification: calcifiers are only the tip of the iceberg' (2010-2013) which resulted in > 20 publications and 4 graduated PhD students, 1 Msc  and 2 Honours students.  She also ran a 12 year project funded by the Foundation for Research, Science and Technology (FoRST), to examine the physiological biodiversity of New Zealand seaweeds, and was co-investigator on two additional Marsden projects between 1998 and 2004.

Description
The world's oceans are becoming more acidic due to the sustained absorption of excess atmospheric C02. Ocean acidification (OA) is predicted to affect the physiology of marine organisms at a specific level with calcifying species being particularly threatened because low pH impairs the formation, and causes dissolution, of their calcite skeletons. In temperate coastal communities, seaweeds are ecosystem engineers that modify their local chemical (e.g. pH) and physical (e.g. water flow) environment; this modification might offset the negative effects of OA on calcifiers. Brown seaweeds (Order Fucales) are ecologically dominant primary producers of temperate coastal seas, supplying food and habitat for calcifying fauna living on their blade surface (e.g. bryozoans, tube worms) but also forming dense canopies sheltering understory calcareousalgae. At the surface of all seaweeds, there is a thin (mm) layer of seawater called the "diffusive boundary layer" (DBL) whose chemistry, including pH, is controlled by the seaweed's metabolism. Depending on algal morphology, the DBL thickness varies, forming a sometimes thick (6 cm) DBL associated with the seaweed canopy, thus providing more or less complex microhabitats for associated species. The proposed program will combine field observations with rigorous laboratory experiments to examine the ability of morphologically distinct seaweeds to engineer their hydrodynamic and pH environment, and determine the resultant effects on the growth and physiology of associated invertebrates and calcifying algae. To know species interactions under environmental change is important to understand community functioning in a future ocean. This innovative project will compare the generality of responses by conducting experiments using the same novel methods in Fuclean communities from the southern (Tasmania) and northern (Germany) hemispheres, thereby elucidating the extent to which seaweed-based ecosystems can provide natural refugia from OA.

Associate Professor Hurd has supervised to completion 20 PhD, 10 MSc and 15 Honours students, and mentored seven postdoctoral fellows; most have pursued successful careers in science.  Students interested in joining her research group require a strong background in algal physiology and/or ecology, and HDR students will require evidence of an ability to publish their research.
