Research Themes
As an international expert on feeding and nutrition physiology of aquatic ectotherms with a particular focus on aquaculture nutrition and sustainable aquaculture, Chris aligns with the Resources and Sustainability theme. His aim is to advance fundamental knowledge about aquatic animals, mainly fish and crustaceans, and use this to contribute to applied outcomes, particularly understanding what impacts on growth efficiency and how to improve feed efficiency and achieve sustainable aquafeeds. With colleagues including students he has worked protein and amino acid metabolism, bioenergetics, nutrient requirements, lipid and fatty acid utilisation, pigmentation, mineral dynamics and improving ingredient digestibility using additional enzymes. He is also interested in the social behaviour of animals in aquaculture environments and how this affects individual animals. Working with industry partners is an important part of his research because it means that research findings are quickly transferred into commercial production.
Chris enjoys working on different species and over the years has published work on many fish including salmon and trout, tuna, seahorses, barramundi, eels, carp and several flatfish. He has also worked on several species of lobster and squid.
Working with colleagues achievements include:
- First formulated feeds for successful larval culture of rock lobsters (2013)
- First demonstration that individual can salmon regulate their metabolism in relation to hypoxia (2009)
- First study of protein synthesis over the entire life cycle of an invertebrate (2010)
- First successful formulated feed for giant southern bluefin tuna (1998)
- First study of protein synthesis in fish using a stable isotope marker (1994)
- Early research on successful use of enzyme supplements in salmon aquafeeds (1994)
- Early research on successful use of soybean (1994) and of lupins (2000) in salmon aquafeeds
- First direct demonstration of direct relationship between respiration and growth in fish (1992).
Collaboration
Professor Carter is currently involved in several collaborative projects including the ARC ITRH on Commercial Development of Rock Lobster Culture Systems, with industry partners on the development of the Experimental Aquaculture Facility for research on large salmon, and with CSIRO on fish oil replacement.

- Description
- The Tasmanian salmon industry is seeking to grow production safely and sustainably over the next two decades, further increasing the tangible benefits to the Tasmanian community. The aim is to deliver this by being the most environmentally sustainable salmon industry in the world creating an industry that all Tasmanians can be proud of. To achieve this bold vision for a world class salmon industry in Tasmania, it requires a clear focus on development of both sea and land-based farming operations, utilisation of the best available technologies, and collaboration with researchers and aquaculture innovators. To support this development, scientists, industry, regulators and non-government organisations will come together in late-2018 for a Salmon Symposium, with the purpose of drafting an integrated roadmap for the future of the industry. This Symposium will provide a platform to review, analyse and consider pathways to implementation of worlds best practices and future developments in farming systems, environmental management, biosecurity, science and policy. To prepare for the 2018 Symposium, the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) is hosting a pre-symposium conference from 6th-8th December 2017. This planning conference will bring together international experts who will work with industry representatives, researchers, regulators and non-government organisations to set a clear direction and build an agenda for the 2018 event. To support the planning and management of these events a steering committee was formed with representatives from UTAS, government and industry. The steering committee is supported by a science committee that has reviewed and advised on international speakers, formulated discussion topics and devised the format for the series of public talks and conference workshops that will form the initial event. The science committee will also oversee the development of a one or more green policy papers on environmental management, biosecurity and future farming operations that will assist the ongoing management of the industry and provide the basis of the 2018 symposium program. The 2018 Sympoisum will include workshops in order to continue the new knowledge based approach established at the 2017 meeting. The conferences will create new knowledge through the workshops that aim to document, analyse and assess current best practice in order to define World Best Practice and consider implementation at a global level.

- Description
- The Ostreid herpesvirus type 1 microvariant (OsHV-1) is associated with the onset of Pacific oyster mortality syndrome (POMS). It has been found that mortality can occur within days of exposure to the virus, and may be 100% on some sites and with some stocks more susceptible than others. OsHV-1 was first implicated in mass mortalities of farmed Pacific Oyster (Crassostrea gigas) in European stock, with widespread mortalities in the French industry during 2008. The first cases of POMS occurred in the Southern Hemisphere with outbreaks in New Zealand in 2010, followed by isolated areas of Botany Bay, NSW, Australia in 2011. The oyster industry has been severely affected in France, NZ and Australia with significant responses deployed in these countries to combat this disease. In 2015/16 POMS was first recorded in areas of the south east coast of Tasmania, this is the first time mortalities had been recorded outside of NSW. As with previous outbreaks the disease manifested as mass mortalities during Summer, mortality was greatest in younger stock, however in some areas mortality was up to 100% across all age classes. There was a range of survival obtained from selectively breed POMS resistant stocks, it is envisaged that these stocks will be used for future targeted research, with the benefit of prior research done into POMS in other parts of Australia and New Zealand. Of particular interest are some of the practical solutions devised for the clean hatchery production of spat in NZ hatcheries. Research will:-Determine the best practices for breeding from previously exposed OsHV-1 stocks. -Design, development and biosecurity protocols for the use and holding of previously OsHV-1 exposed broodstock, including natural and targeted depuration protocols.-Development of microalgal and selective family production protocols.-Trial and develop new production technologies.-Evaluate and modification of hatchery protocols.-Development of stress test parameters and protocols for a pre-stocking assessment of spat and for juveniles and adults.-Collaboration in the development of larval challenge experimentation.

- This Sense-T project brings together the Tasmanian Salmonid Growers' Association, IMAS and CSIRO to collect and analyse data from salmon farms in Macquarie Harbour. Sensors will be attached to individual 'sentinel' fish in pens in addition to sensors in the environment. Data will be collected on fish behaviour as well as environmental conditions such as water temperature, dissolved oxygen and depth. This will: help to reduce feed wastage by ensuring fish are fed when environmental conditions are suitable; collect new or previously difficult to obtain information about the harbour environment and the impact of salmon farming on variables such as oxygen levels; improve the salmon industry's efficiency and productivity; provide real-time data to support decision-making; and, highlight areas where the industry could improve its environmental practices.

- Description
- The project will develop an innovative suite of methods to assess the condition of Eastern rock lobster, (Sagmariasus verreauxi), in order to maximise growth and reproductive potential. The methods will have direct application in the management of declining wild stocks and for aquaculture research and development. New methods will be compared with current tests on the basis of their efficiency, practicality and cost-effectiveness in assessing the nutritional condition of juvenile and adult lobsters held in different laboratory-controlled states of moult stage, starvation and feeding. The novel methods developed will provide a cutting-edge toolkit for the fisheries and aquaculture industries. Innovative and hi-tech approaches will be used for the first time to accurately determine the progression of rock lobsters within their lengthy intermoult stage. This is essential to better interpret blood biochemistry, as the position in the moult cycle has a major effect on blood metabolite concentration. The extended project provides an opportunity to validate the science and develop techniques by performing two case studies: an experiment with cultured Eastern rock lobster juveniles fed a range of diets; and a study of the condition of wild stocks of Southern rock lobster, (Jasus edwardsii), sampled from two populations in Tasmania.

- Description
- Researchers will partner with industry to develop innovative aquaculture technology to produce rock lobsters. Lobsters are a valuable and sought after seafood in expanding markets. Current supply relies on wild stocks, many of which are in decline. Previous research has already solved key bottlenecks in production of three species. The project will develop sophisticated culture systems, using unique engineering, state-of-the art hatcheries and plastic manufacturing. Commercial opportunities will result for Australian companies in an international, multi-million dollar aquaculture venture which aims at sustainable food production. Australia will benefit from more sustainable wild fisheries enhanced through the release of seed lobsters.
