Dr Delphine Lannuzel is an ARC DECRA fellow at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies. She is interested in the field of sea ice biogeochemistry.

Biography

Delphine was awarded her PhD in September 2006, at the Université Libre de Bruxelles upon presentation of a thesis on 'The Biogeochemistry of Iron in the Antarctic sea ice Environment'. She did her undergraduate degree at the Institut Universitaire Européen de la Mer, Brest, France.

Expertise

Dr Delphine Lannuzel is a specialist in sea ice biogeochemistry, based at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS). Her research examines the interaction between the chemistry and biology in the sea ice environment. Her skills lie in the fields of sea ice biogeochemistry, trace elements, chemical oceanography, and environmental analytical chemistry. She is internationally regarded for her research on the iron cycle in sea ice.

Research Themes

Delphine's research lies in the study of trace metals in the sea ice environment. The iron and other trace elements profiles generated during her research represented the first data for the Antarctic pack ice zone. Her pioneer work highlighted the accumulation of trace element iron in the sea ice medium and therefore the paramount importance of Antarctic sea ice to iron biogeochemical cycling in polar ecosystems.

Dr Lannuzel collaborates with national and international research centres spanning across the field of glaciology, oceanography and atmospheric sciences.

Current projects

Dr Lannuzel is currently finishing her DECRA project which aims at assessing the importance of sea ice as a natural fertiliser in the climatically important polar region.

She is also leading a field work program at Davis station to study the Impact of changes in sea ice extent on primary productivity in the Southern Ocean: links between the iron and carbon cycles in fast ice and the marginal ice zone.

Sampling and analytical instrumentation for trace metal marine chemistry

Development of a novel method for sampling and measuring trace elements in the sea ice environment, since such technologies did not presently exist worldwide (Lannuzel et al., 2006). Design of fully automated, stand-alone flow injection instrumentation and appropriate chemistries for the on-line mapping and speciation of trace metals in marine samples (Lannuzel et al., 2006; Queroue et al., 2014; Lannuzel et al., 2015b). Set up reliable and efficient digestion and analytical technique for the determination of metals in marine particles (Bowie et al., 2010).

Trace metal biogeochemistry in sea ice

Spatial and temporal distribution of minor and major nutrients in samples of sea ice, snow, brine and the underlying seawater. Publication of the first detailed profiles of trace metals distribution in Antarctic pack ice (iron, aluminium, manganese, barium, copper, zinc, cadmium, molybdenum and chromium) (Lannuzel et al., 2011a; 2014a) Use of aluminium and manganese as tracers of dust deposition and sediment re-suspension (Lannuzel et al., 2014; Lannuzel et al., 2015a). Elucidate trace metal main sources and pathways to Antarctic sea ice (van der Merwe et al., 2011b; Lannuzel et al, 2007;2008;2015a). Discovery that most of iron is associated to organic matter in Antarctic sea ice (Schoemann et al., 2008;Lannuzel et al., 2015b).

Iron control of Southern Ocean productivity

Report spatial, seasonal and inter-annual variability of iron distribution in the Southern Ocean and demonstrate the paramount importance of iron in the polar ecosystem. Generate iron vertical profiles along the SR3-section (Tagliabue et al., 2009)  and in waters South of Tasmania (Bowie et al., 2009; Lannuzel et al., 2011b)  as a mean to elucidate the zonal differences in phytoplankton productivity in the Southern Ocean.

In 2006, Delphine was awarded two Belgian Fellowships for young polar researchers. She then successfully applied for funding from the Scientific Committee on Antarctic Research (SCAR) and the Surface Ocean Low Atmosphere Science (SOLAS) in 2007 to build up her promising career as a polar researcher in Hobart. In 2008, she was granted an Early Career Researcher only Australian Research Council (ARC Discovery 2009-11 DP0985361) and UNESCO L'Oréal (declined due to successful ARC). She has collaborated on major grants from the Australian Antarctic Science scheme in 2008 and 2009, as well the University of Tasmania (UTAS) Cross Linkage and the Institutional Research Grants Scheme (IRGS) grants in 2010 and 2014.

More recently, she was successful with obtaining an ARC DECRA (2012-present) as well as leading major AAS field program in Antarctica in 2012 (AAS 3026) and 2015 (AAS 4291).

Impact of the predicted changes in sea ice extent on primary productivity in the Southern Ocean: links between the iron and carbon (2015 - 2017)$41,696
Description
Despite its potential to naturally fertilize the Southern Ocean with iron, stimulating carbon uptake export, the marginal ice zone has been understudied compared to open ocean regions with respect to its contribution to the biological carbon pump. Our international (AUS-US-Belgium-Japan), multi-disciplinary, project will assess the physical and biological drivers of both the iron and carbon cycles in the marginal ice zone, quantifying the fertilization potential of sea ice and the associated primary productivity. Combining a fast ice process study, laboratory experiments, and ship-based sampling of the marginal ice zone, we will generate an improved understanding of the biogeochemistry required to constrain predictions of the changing sea ice habitat in the East Australian sector.

When Sinks Become Sources; Understanding Persistent Organic Pollutant Behaviour in Dynamic Polar Environments (2015 - 2016)$12,640
Description
The Antarctic seasonal-ice zone provides an archetype for multi-compartment, temporal observations of POP partitioning in response to the major drivers of POP transfer and fate such as ice cover and primary productivity. In addition, the major Antarctic POP reservoirs of seawater and ice will be characterised through this project. Empirical data will be used to parameterise a regional POP mass balance model. Model application to
varying climate scenarios will extend our understanding of POP behaviour and threat in Polar Regions.

The Role of Antarctic Sea Ice as a Natural Ocean Fertiliser (2012 - 2014)$375,000
Description
Marine phytoplankton remove the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through the process of photosynthesis, and therefore play a key role in regulating Earths climate. In remote regions like the Southern Ocean, phytoplankton growth is effectively limited by the scarcity of trace elements such as iron. However, while the rest of the Southern Ocean is iron-depleted and phytoplankton-poor, there is now clear evidence that Antarctic sea ice melt releases iron and triggers seasonal ice-edge phytoplankton blooms observable from space. In order to reliably characterise the ocean carbon cycle, this project will assess the role of sea ice as a natural fertiliser of iron and other key nutrients in the climatically important polar zone.

Iron in the Antarctic Sea Ice Zone and Its Role in the Past and Future Climate (2009 - 2011)$300,000
Description
This project will assess the importance of the trace micro-nutrient element iron to Antarctic sea ice algal communities. The biogeochemistry of iron, including a comprehensive examination of its distribution, speciation, cycling and role in fuelling ice-edge phytoplankton blooms will be investigated. A significant part of this research will concentrate on the influence of organic exopolysaccharides on iron solubility, complexation and bioavailability, both within the ice and in surrounding surface waters. This innovative research will improve our understanding of key processes that control the productivity of the climatically important Antarctic sea ice zone.
