Biography

John has held numerous academic positions at the University of Tasmania for the last 25 years after moving from a management position in the Tasmanian salmon industry. These positions include centre head, deputy head, graduate research coordinator, and coordinator for work integrated learning, coursework Masters, Honours and community engagement. From 2010-2014 he was Director of the National Centre for Marine Conservation and Resource Sustainability in the AMC (UTAS) and is now deputy centre head for fisheries and aquaculture following the move of NCMCRS from AMC to IMAS in 2014. He is a member of the Society of Biology.

Research Themes

John's aquaculture research aligns with the University's theme of Marine, Antarctic and Maritime, covering topics such as fish behaviour, optimisation of food intake, fish culture techniques and fish welfare in the context of aquaculture. Fish behaviour research has focused on locomotor activity, agonistic interactions, food anticipatory activity and swimming speed. Most food intake and behaviour research has encompassed commercial sea-caged salmon, rainbow trout, and the developing species flounder and seahorses. Research has been in collaboration with industry and international partners. The work on seahorse and flounder production was globally recognised. More recently he has undertaken research on eradication of invasive fish such as Gambusia and common carp, and the behavioural interactions between Gambusia and native fish such as galaxiids. He has also returned recently to research on freshwater invertebrates and the interaction with salmon hatchery outfalls in streams.

The biology and taxonomy of spongillaflies (Sisyridae) and associated freshwater sponges in Four Springs Lake in the Launceston area (2013)$2,000
Description
This research will further explore the taxonomy of the spongillaflies and freshwater sponges in Four Springs Lake, as only the second documented location of sisyrids in Tasmania. The proposed research specifically will: i) describe the developmental stages of the sisyrid in Four Springs and compare it to other documented species in Australia to ascertain if it is a new species; and ii) describe the features (spicules and gemmules) of the associated freshwater sponge to compare to those sponges in other lakes. Techniques involved in the research include sisyrid propagation, electron microscopy and light microscopy.
