Achievements

Dr. Gail Lugten holds undergraduate degrees in Law, Arts and Education. She has a Ph.D. in international law and 20 years experience teaching undergraduate students and supervising postgraduate students. She has published extensively in texts, international marine journals and international reports and she has been the recipient of Australian Research Council grant funding. She has been a legal consultant to various international organisations including the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (UNFAO), the WorldFish Center, the Global Environment Facility (GEF), the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Pew Charitable Trusts. From 2011 to 2014 Dr. Lugten was employed as Fisheries Liaison Officer with the United Nations in Rome. In this capacity she was the lead officer in the Regional Fishery Bodies Taskforce and the secretary of the Regional Fishery Body Secretariats' Network (RSN). From 2012 -2014 Dr Lugten was responsible for teaching international fisheries law at the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) in Hamburg. In 2015 Dr Lugten returned to the University of Tasmania where she is currently the Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching in the Faculty of Law.
