Professor Ellingsen is a Professor in Physics and Radio astronomy and Head of Discipline for Physics. His major areas of research are in the formation of massive stars, in particular through the study of methanol masers and other molecular maser species. He is also involved in research of active galactic nuclei through very long baseline interferometry, flux density monitoring and studies of megamaser emission.

Biography

Simon received his PhD from the University of Tasmania in 1996. He was appointed as a lecturer in physics in 2000, promoted to senior lecturer in 2005 and to Associate Professor in 2010.

Research Themes

Simon's primary research interest is in the study of the formation of high-mass stars, particularly through radio astronomy observations of methanol masers. High mass stars form in regions of dense gas and dust which completely obscures them from view at optical wavelengths. Fortunately radio frequency radiation passes through the gas and dust unhindered. Interstellar masers are naturally occurring radio frequency lasers, which are often associated with newly formed large stars. The fundamental aim of his work is to measure the physical conditions, such as temperature, density and pressure around from observations of the masers in order to understand important questions such as how planets form. Recently he has been working on using the presence/absence of various interstellar maser species/transitions as an evolutionary clock for high-mass star formation regions.

Simon is a member of the international methanol multibeam collaboration, which used the Parkes radio telescopes to survey the entire Galaxy for methanol masers to undertake the first complete census of high-mass star formation in our Galaxy. He is the lead investigator of a large project with the Australian Long Baseline Array to make trigonometric parallax measurements towards 30 southern methanol maser sources to trace the spiral structure of the southern Milky Way.

Other active research interests including studying active galactic nuclei through observations of interstellar scintillation (ISS). This is where the interstellar medium causes intensity fluctuations in some distant radio sources (analogous to the twinkling of stars caused by the Earth's atmosphere). By tracing changes in the timescale of the intensity fluctuations throughout the year it is possible to make inferences about the AGN on microarcsecond angular scales (factors of 10-100 better than can be achieved through any other current technique). Our program to observe interstellar scintillation in AGN with the Ceduna radio telescope received an Engineering Excellence award from Engineers Australia.Simon has also used observations of methanol emission and absorption to test whether some of the fundamental constants of physics have changed over the lifetime of the Universe.  In particular, observations of absorption in two different rotational transitions of the methanol molecule in the gravitational lens system PKS B1830-211 have shown that the ratio of the mass of the proton to the mass of the electron has changed by less than 1 part in 10 million over the last 7.2 billion years.  Recently he detected the first class I methanol masers outside the Milky Way, towards the starburst galaxy NGC253. Detection of other class I methanol masers in more distant sources may open a new and powerful method for testing for changes in the fundamental constants of physics.

Collaboration

Simon is involved in a range of international research collaborations:

Simon is the principal investigator for a large (600 hour) project being undertaken with the Australian Long Baseline Array to measure accurate distances to 30 star formation regions in the Southern Milky Way.  This project is a collaboration between scientists in Australian, USA, Germany, Japan, China and South Africa who are seeking to obtain the most accurate picture to date of the structure of our Galaxy.  We are currently seeking funds to expand the project to a further 100 southern star formation regions utilising the new capabilities of broadband receiver systems on the University of Tasmania AuScope very long baseline array.

The Parkes Methanol Multibeam survey is a collaboration primarily between the UK and Australia, to make the largest and most sensitive search of the Milky Way for 6.7 GHz methanol masers (which are excellent signposts of regions where high-mass stars are forming).  The observational phase of this project is now complete and analysis and follow-up observations are well underway.  This project has produced more than a dozen refereed publications.  Simon's primary contribution to the project has been in a deep survey (approximately an order of magnitude more sensitive than the main survey) undertaken in conjunction with a pulsar search.  This deep survey is being used to investigate the faint-source/low-luminosity population and to determine the completeness of the main survey.

Simon is collaborating with astronomers at the Shanghai Observatory (China) to investigate the recently discovered phenomenon of class I methanol megamasers. We discovered the first extragalactic class I methanol masers in 2014 and found that they arise in regions where there are large-scale, low-velocity shocks.  We think that these masers will be a new and powerful means to study star formation and feedback processes in starburst galaxies (galaxies where star formation is occurring at a much greater rate than it does in normal spiral galaxies like the Milky Way).

Grants & Funding

In the last 10 years Simon has been a chief investigator on 5 successful ARC projects (2 Discovery, 1 Special Research initiative, 1 LIEF, 1 Super Science) which have received total funding of more than $1M.

In 2014 he and his team received an ARC LIEF grant to fund development and installation of sensitive broadband receiver systems on the UTAS AuScope array. These new receivers will significantly enhance the science capabilities of the array for both geodesy and astronomy. The on-telescope testing and installation of the receivers will take place in the second half of 2015 with operations to commence in 2016.

Geophysical, Galactic, and Extra-galactic Science with the AuScope and ASKP Arrays (2010 - 2013)$556,800
Description
This research will determine the scale of the Milky Way Galaxy and the structure of its interstellar gas. It will generate a catalogue of primary reference radio sources for the extension of the International Celestial Reference Frame to the Southern Hemisphere. The project will extend this to the earth by linking the celestial reference frame to the terrestrial reference frame. This will fulfil the mission of the AuScope array by setting the Global Positioning System on a solid foundation in Australia and other Southern Hemisphere nations to measure changes in the Earth.

Long Baseline Array (LBA) Observation at the Hobart and Ceduna Radio Telescopes (2009 - 2018)$629,300
Description
The Australia Telescope National Facility (ATNF), CSIRO Astronomy and Space Science, manages the operation of the Long Baseline Array (LBA) facility within Australia. The LBA operates regularly, using radio telescopes across Australia, Including all ATNF antennas (the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), Mopra and Parkes), the 70-m and 34-m antennas owned by NASA's Canberra Deep Space Communications Complex at Tidbinbilla, and the Ceduna and Hobart antennas operated by the University of Tasmania. The Australian LBA also runs in collaboration with other international facilities (e.g. Hartebeesthoek, RSA) to provide intercontinental Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) observations.

Research Supervision

In the last 5 years Simon has had three PhD students graduate. Simon currently supervises 6 students in PhD projects in astrophysics.

Simon has a range of PhD projects available.  These projects cover a range of topics, including investigations of the physical processes that govern high-mass star formation, astrometry using very long baseline interferometry, searches for cosmological variation in the electron-to-proton mass ratio, investigations of feedback processes in starburst galaxies and ultra-high resolution investigations of active galactic nuclei using interstellar scintillation. For more information on projects, please contact him.  Students need either a masters degree or first-class honours in physics or astrophysics, experience in radio astronomy (an interferometry in particular) is desirable, but not essential.
