Ask Professor Brad Potts why he studies eucalypt genetics and he will tell you the answer is simple, 'The excitement of discovery'.

Professor Potts' passion for discovery has led him to publish a significant body of work.  In fact, if you do a search on eucalypt genetics, you are likely to find more scientific journal articles published by Brad Potts than anyone else in the world.

Unlocking the eucalypt genome – a mission of global significance

'If I had lived in another era I would have been an explorer,' said Professor Potts. 'There is nothing like setting out to discover the unknown.'

So why is eucalypt genetics so important?

'Eucalypts are grown all over the world.  They're used to produce firewood in Africa, paper in South America and Europe, bio-fuel in the US, to name a few. They are iconic native Australian trees which are of great ecological and economic significance to Australia, and they're our country's major living genetic resource contribution to rural economies of the world.'

'In Tasmania, we are sitting right in the middle of the natural range of one of the world's globally significant species,' said Professor Potts.

Eucalypts are so important that the US Department of Energy funded an international project to sequence the genome of a eucalypt species.  A group of 80 scientists from 10 countries around the globe worked together to produce the Eucalypt Genome Sequence that was published in Nature in 2014.

'This is mega science on an international scale.  It took a decade and included the world's leading scientists in this field – and Tasmania's researchers were at the table.'

Eucalypt genetics have been studied in Tasmania since the 1930's, and Professor Potts is proud to be included in a long line of professors that have specialised in the area.

'We have a database of experiments dating back to the 40's and a magnificent natural laboratory on our doorstep.  Our laboratory is sandwiched between the sea and a mountain, with great natural diversity all around us.'

Professor Potts works on the evolutionary processes that have shaped this natural diversity, as well as providing research to support the planting of eucalypts for fibre and wood production, and environmental benefits.  He works with diverse organisations from those managing native eucalypt forests for conservation, to those breeding eucalypts for plantations.

Understanding the response of eucalypts to environmental change is a key line of research for both economic and conservation purposes. His applied discoveries help answer questions like - how do we improve plantations to produce better paper?  How can we optimize the recovery of products such as timber and veneer from a plantation resource instead of using native forests?  How do we know which type of tree is best suited to each site?

'I am currently working with Greening Australia to restore landscapes by establishing trees in harsh, dry conditions.  Our trials have seen 30,000 trees planted in the Tasmanian Midlands just in 2014.'

'It is a really exciting project.  Every tree has a tag and is tracked by computer.  We can trace each tree back to the mother tree growing in the native forest from where seed and DNA has been collected'.'I like the fact that in 100 years time, people will be benefitting from the carbon and biodiversity work that we are doing today.'

Brad Potts is the Professor of Forest Genetics in the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Tasmania. He specializes in the eucalypt genetics, with his research spanning diverse fields from tree breeding, reproductive biology, evolutionary biology to community genetics.  In 2008 he was awarded the Royal Society of New South Wales Clarke Medal for distinguished work in the field of Natural Sciences in Australia and its Territories. He also received the Royal Society of Tasmania's Clive Lord Medal in 2014 for recognition of his substantial contributions to Tasmanian science.

Biography

As a full time research-only academic at UTAS since 1984, Brad has developed a large network of national and international collaborators and worked in many countries, including France, Chile, China, Portugal and South Africa. He has extensive experience at the industry/academia interface, as well as in research adoption and science communication, through his long-term involvement in three consecutive forestry Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs). He was project leader in the CRC for Temperate Hardwood Forestry, and manager of the 'Genetic Improvement' program in the CRC for Sustainable Production Forestry. He was subsequently involved in the development of the successful CRC for Forestry bid, and managed its 'Trees in the Landscape' program with a specific leadership of its 'Biodiversity' project.  He subsequently held research leadership roles in (i) the National Centre for Future Forest Industries (NCFFI) which was headquartered at UTAS, and (ii) the Commonwealth of Australia's Collaborative Research Network (CRN) involving the University of the Sunshine Coast, Griffith University and UTAS. Both of these roles terminated in 2014. As well as leading ARC Discovery and Linkage projects, Brad is a theme leader in the ARC Centre for Forest Value which is an Industry Transformation Training Centre based at UTAS,  commencing in 2016. He has been on the organising committee of seven international conferences, and he was the main CI on the Sir Mark Oliphant 'International Frontiers of Science and Technology' funding from Australian  Academy of Science and Technology to host 'Old Forests New Management' Conference in 2008.

Research Themes

Brad's research relates to the University's research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. He specialises in eucalypt genetics, an iconic Australian tree genus which is grown world-wide. His research interests range from gene pool utilization (e.g. tree breeding) and management, conservation and forest restoration, to understanding the evolutionary relationships and process that have shaped extant variation patterns in this iconic genus. A major line of research is the genetic control and adaptive significance of variation in tree phenotype. This research involves the integration of quantitative and molecular approaches. The effects of genes may extend beyond the classic phenotype (extended phenotype) and his research includes studying the effects that genetic variation in foundation species has on dependent organisms and ecosystem processes. Global climate change as well as exotic pests and diseases are now important considerations for both gene pool conservation and utilisation. Several research projects are aimed at predicting future changes in the adaptive surface of eucalypt species and testing provenancing strategies to ensure resilient forest restoration.

Collaboration

Brad is working on projects with many national and international collaborators, several of which involve student exchanges. A key collaboration involves the EUCAGEN network – the international network of scientists formed to bring the first eucalypt genome sequence to fruition. This was achieved in 2011, and the resulting Nature paper (Myburg et al. 2014) involved 80 scientists from 10 countries. With other UTAS colleagues he is involved in an Australian and Brazilian consortium assembling a Corymbia genome – a sister genus to Eucalyptus. He also has active collaborations with scientists in Portugal (University of Lisbon), France (INRA) and the USA (University of Tennessee, Northern Arizona University). These collaborations include being a: (i) CI on a 5 year grant (Whitham et al.) from the USA NSF program for 'Frontiers in Integrative Biological Research' in 2004 to develop the emerging field of Community and Ecosystem Genetics, and (ii) co-supervisor on two post-doctoral fellowships from the Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology based at the University of Lisbon (e.g. Costa e Silva 2015). At a national-level, long-term collaborations with industry partners have allowed Brad to establish a unique base of eucalypt field trials across Australia (including through formal partnerships with the Southern Tree Breeding Association and Greening Australia).  The Tasmanian headquarters of CSIRO Ecosystem Sciences is also on the UTAS campus, and their staff regularly collaborate on research projects and co-supervise PhD students.

Genetics of species differentiation and hybridisation in Eucalyptus (2016 - 2018)$360,300
Description
This project aims to use state-of-the-art genomic technologies to (i) characterise genes and genomic regionsimportant for speciation and adaptation in Australias iconic eucalypts, and (ii) study the importance ofhybridisation between species, especially during range expansion and contraction. A major international efforthas seen a eucalypt become the second forest tree genome sequenced. This project links the expandinginternational knowledge on the eucalypt genome to the evolutionary dynamics of wild populations in Australia toprovide unprecedented insights into the nature of species and processes which have shaped their evolution. These insights can inform their breeding as well as their conservation and management in Australia.

The role of recombination in eucalypt evolution (2014 - 2016)$318,000
Description
Meiotic recombination is a key source of the genetic variation upon which evolution thrives. This project exploits new genomic resources to provide the first detailed study of recombination in Australias iconic eucalypts and clarify its evolutionary role. In particular, it examines: variation in the rate of recombination along the eleven eucalypt chromosomes, and determine genome features which are associated with hotspots and coldspots of recombination; the patterns of variation in recombination rates between species, genotypes, sexes and chromosomes; and whether the environment and population history affect recombination and thus evolvability of natural populations.

Genetics of species differentiation and hybridisation in eucalyptus (2013 - 2015)$355,000
Description
The predominantly Australian genus Eucalyptus is a diverse assemblage of over 700 species and many hybrid types which are adapted to an extraordinary range of habitats. This project uses a population genomic approach to understand the genetic basis of species divergence and the role of hybridisation in the evolution of the genus. It studies the extent and importance of the gene exchange that occurs between species, especially during range expansion and contraction. State-of-the-art genomic technology are used to generate genome scans of multiple species to identify and characterise genomic regions that are important for speciation and adaptation. These genome scans will be incorporated into publicly available genome browsers.

Providing a genetic framework to enhance the success and benefits from forest restoration and carbon plantings in rural landscapes (2012 - 2015)$680,000
Description
This project provides a genetic framework to guide forest restoration and carbon plantings in Australia and inform strategies for climate change adaptation. A network of genetic trials, integrated into large-scale environmental tree plantings will be used to study the genetic diversity and adaptive potential of native tree species. Using planted seedlings and direct sowing trials of two eucalypt species the project assesses the effect of multiple scales of tree genetic diversity (species, provenance, families) on performance across different sites, species mixtures and levels of structural complexity. It also assesses local versus non-local seed sources and the role of tree genetics in shaping dependent biodiversity and other ecosystem services.

Genetics of eucalypt disease tolerance (2012)$20,000
Description
Myrtle rust has recently entered Australia, posing a serious threat to our (myrtaceous) flora including major species from the genera Eucalptus and Corymbia. There is an urgent need to understand how tolerant our vegetation is to the disease in order to better predict its economic and environmental effects. Using quantitative genetic approaches, we aim to elucidate the genetic basis of tolerance in Eucalyptus and Corymbia and compare it with tolerance to native pathogens. This one year project will produce publications and build collaborative links, providing the foundation for further research in comparative genetics/genomics.

The Genetics of Adaptation: Changing Developmental Trajectories of Eucalypts (2011 - 2013)$285,000
Description
This project aims to discover the genes and alleles controlling the timing of the distinctive and often rapid transition from juvenile to adult leaf types that occurs during the life of many of the 700+ species of Eucalyptus in Australia. Variation in the timing of developmental events such as vegetative and reproductive phase change is believed to have played a key role in both animal and plant evolution, including eucalypts. The project will determine the role of these phase change genes in adaptation and species divergence in eucalypts and provide new insights into the control of maturation processes in trees.

Devising Ecologically Sustainable Restoration Programs for Degraded Rural Landscapes by Integrating Landscape Ecology, Conservation Genetics and Ecophysiology (2009 - 2012)$730,000
Description
Restoring the ecological function of degraded rural landscapes is a national priority, yet achieving this goal remains a major challenge. Combining approaches from different ecological disciplines the project will: (a) identify priority areas for tree plantings; (b) determine which tree species can establish in degraded landscapes, and have the capacity to grow in the predicted hotter and drier climates in the late 21st century; (c) evaluate whether local species or races are necessarily better than non-local types; and (d) understand the trade-off between tree growth, carbon storage and water use. This research will provide an urgently needed scientific framework for proposed large-scale restoration of degraded Tasmanian rural landscapes.

Genetic Architecture of Species Divergence and Hybridisation in Eucalypts (2009 - 2012)$490,000
Description
Eucalyptus is a diverse genus of over 700 species adapted to an extraordinary range of habitats. There is increasing evidence that hybridisation among species has played a significant role in eucalypt evolution, and may be an important source of genetic variation for extant species to adapt to environmental change. This project uses state-of-the-art genomic technology and a model system of co-distributed, closely related species of Eucalyptus to assess what proportions and regions of the genome are associated with species divergence, the extent and nature of the genetic exchange which occurs between species in natural forests, and the phenotypic and fitness consequences of such gene exchange.
