Associate Professor Ross has published extensively in the area of plant developmental biology, with a strong focus on genetics and plant hormones. Two key hormones that he has studied are auxin and gibberellins. In 2000 and subsequent years, he and his students showed for the first time that auxin promotes the biosynthesis of gibberellin in the shoots of a range of plants. Since then he and his group have made major contributions to our understanding of how plants synthesis auxin. John has published more papers that discuss both these plant hormones than any other researcher.

Biography

John obtained Bachelor's degrees in Agricultural Science and Science (Honours) and a PhD at UTAS. Since then he has been a Research Fellow employed on ARC grants, an ARC Australian Research Fellow (1995-1999), a 'New Star' (2009 to 2014) and is now a Senior Lecturer in the School of Biological Sciences.

Research Themes

John's research aligns to the University's research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability. His research interests include understanding how hormones regulate the partitioning of resources, especially carbohydrates, into different parts of the plant, with an emphasis on seeds. Since seeds are the harvested portion of most crops, this research has a practical application, and relates directly to attempts to maximise agricultural production in a sustainable way. His work has the potential to lead to increased yields, through the development of improved varieties without the need for genetic engineering.

Publications

From the mid-1980s until 2000, John focussed mainly on the gibberellin plant hormones. The paper reporting that that auxin promotes the biosynthesis of active gibberellins (Ross et al 2000; The Plant Journal), is arguably his best publication. After 2005, John's attention turned largely to auxin biosynthesis pathways, and by 2010 his group had refuted one such pathway that had held sway in the literature for 10 years. Since then, the overall area of auxin biosynthesis, across all plants, has been considerably simplified and clarified. Presently the focus of John's laboratory is on the role of auxin in seed formation and development.

Since 1995 John has had almost continuous support from the Australian Research Council (ARC). From 1995 until 1999 he was an ARC Australian Research Fellow. His ARC Large Grants and Discovery Projects have enabled him to make the research breakthroughs described above. Description
Grain legumes provide valuable carbohydrate and protein in human diets, but we do not yet understand the regulation of seed development, especially at the late stages. This project will determine how mutations in key hormone synthesis genes affect seed development in pea, providing important insights into this fundamental process. An integrated model will be developed, incorporating plant hormones, seed storage compounds, and key regulatory proteins. A major goal is to determine whether seed size and composition can be modified by manipulating hormone content.

To manipulate plant development and architecture to meet environmental and agronomic changes, we urgently need to understand how plant hormones act and interact to shape the plant. This project expands a world-class collection of hormone-related mutants in pea to dissect the regulatory mechanisms that control plant growth. It focuses on the growth-promoting hormones auxin, gibberellin and brassinosteroids, and their interactions with the new branching hormone, strigolactone, and with the growth-inhibiting hormones abscisic acid and ethylene.
