Geoff is a PhD candidate in the Department of Politics and International Relations, and Director of Heriot Media & Governance Pty Ltd. He has extensive experience as a broadcasting executive, strategist and media governance specialist, in Australia and internationally; and served as an ABC foreign correspondent and executive producer. Geoff has advised senior management groups and governing boards in a number of Asian countries, as well as Papua New Guinea and the Pacific, the Arabian Gulf and South Africa. He chairs the state government’s Screen Tasmania Advisory Board and serves on the board of Island Magazine Inc.

Following a long career with the ABC, Geoff has worked as a consultant/adviser to media and government sector organisations in Australia and internationally, since 2009. Through his company, Heriot Media & Governance Pty Ltd, he has provided strategic advice and assistance to the senior management and boards of media organisations undergoing transformation, consulted with government and inter-governmental organisations, undertaken organisational reviews and designed an aid program for Pacific island countries.

During this period, he wrote and published a well-reviewed nonfiction book (In the South: Tales of sail and yearning), contributed to a number of journals and magazines, chaired the Screen Tasmania Advisory Board during a period of substantial growth in the local industry, and chaired the board of Island Magazine Inc.

During Geoff’s ABC career, he held a number of senior editorial and corporate executive roles, among which were: Chief of Corporate Planning and Governance, in support of successive Managing Directors and the ABC Board; General Manager of Corporate Strategy; Head of ABC Education Services; and Controller of News and Programs at Radio Australia (in nine languages). Before that, he was an executive producer with ABC Radio National, and presenter of the Indian Pacific program of weekly analysis. Geoff served as an ABC foreign correspondent in South Asia and PNG/Pacific, and as a Canberra-based reporter. He began his career as a journalist with the Melbourne Herald afternoon newspaper.
