Biography

Qualifications

Cassandra Saunders graduated with a Bachelor of Biomedical Science in 2003 and a Bachelor of Biomedical Science with Honours in 2004 at the University of Tasmania [UTAS]. On completion of her undergraduate degrees, she then went on to complete postgraduate study with a Doctor of Philosophy in 2009, investigating the expression and function of two pain receptors, TRPV1 and TRPV2, in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells in both healthy individuals and those with end-stage kidney disease, also at UTAS. From 2009-2011, Cassandra worked as a lecturer and unit coordinator in the School of Human Life Sciences at UTAS, with a focus on Cell Biology and Biochemistry. She completed a Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching at UTAS in 2011.

Role and Current Research

Cassandra's primary role is the coordination of University surveys, data collection and analysis and reports related to teaching and curriculum quality. Cassandra's role also incorporates leadership of interventions and initiatives in response to triggers for review from survey data and provision of support for University of Tasmania staff and course teams related to access and interpretation of data related to teaching and curriculum. Cassandra also co-coordinates ELT502 Enhancing Professional Practice in University Learning and Teaching, a core unit in the Graduate Certificate in University Learning and Teaching.

Cassandra's key research interest is in the area of student evaluation and is currently involved in two research projects:

  • Researching Students: Investigating the implications and ethical considerations associated with an increasing reliance on student input to measure the effectiveness of learning and teaching initiatives and increased student participation in both educational and discipline-specific research projects. This project is being undertaken in collaboration with the University of Tasmania Social Science Human Research Ethics Committee (SSHREC) and the Quality Evaluation Learning and Teaching (QELT) unit, Faculty of Health. [H0013432]
  • Development and trial of a Professional Experience Placement (PEP) survey tool as a mechanism to measure the quality of the PEP students' learning experiences, including preparation prior to commencing PEP, engagement with active learning while on PEP and opportunities to develop generic graduate attributes. This project is being undertaken in collaboration with the Faculty of Health and has received external funding from the Australian Collaborative Education Network (ACEN). [H0014623]

Development of an online Work Integrated Learning (WIL) survey tool to measure, evaluate and enhance the quality of students WIL experiences (2015)$10,000
Description
The WIL survey instrument will provide a practical method of assessing and reporting students perceptions of the quality of their WIL experience and provides a mechanism to evaluate how students take responsibility for their own learning while on placement. The key project outcome will be the establishment of an online portal and survey instrument that can be utilised both institutionally and cross institutionally for measuring WIL experiences.

International inter-university benchmarking of academic promotion (IIB-AP) (2012)$130,766
Description
This project aims to advance higher education academic promotion policy and practice through the development and dissemination of resources and guidance based on the review and evaluation of current practice within the UK and Australia. The purpose is to compare the policies, processes and perceptions on promotion of universities to contribute to the improvement of academic promotion in higher education. The objectives are: I) to develop and implement a benchmarking framework and resources for comparing promotions policies and processes; 2) to collect data on how promotions policies and processes have been implemented in four universities; 3) to triangulate data on outcomes of promotions in the four universities in the last two years; 4) to effectively disseminate the outcomes nationally and internationally.
