Expertise

  • The use and deployment of microsensors for understanding and tracking insect behaviour (esp. bees)
  • Pollination and pollinator behaviour
  • Biological control
  • The behaviour and chemical ecology of host/mate location/choice and oviposition
  • Behavioural interactions between insect natural enemies (esp. parasitoids) and their hosts
  • The reproductive, foraging and feeding ecology of insects

Research Themes

Allen's research relates to the University's research theme Environment, Resources and Sustainability. In agriculture, this includes reducing pesticide usage, enhancing natural enemy efficacy, the identification and use of insect pheromones, increasing pollinator efficiency and understanding pest and beneficial insect movement in the field.

Collaboration

Geoff has had long-term international involvement with classical biological control of Australian endemic eucalypt pests in New Zealand. He has past and ongoing collaborations with international researchers in Germany, Switzerland, France, Canada, Brazil, USA and United Kingdom. In a cross disciplinary collaboration with CSIRO, Geoff looks into the development and deployment of microsensors to understand and track insect movement. He also has numerous collaborations with agricultural and forestry industries.

Awards

  • Swarm Sensing Project, Tasmanian iAward winner – R&D, Australian Computer Society 2014
  • Swarm Sensing Project, Australian Innovation Challenge Finalist (Environment, Agriculture & Food) 2014

Current projects

Within his research group, Geoff works on numerous insects, but especially parasitic wasps and flies, chrysomelid leaf beetles, eucalypt feeding insects, ladybirds, bees, earwigs and mosquitoes. Some aspects of their research collaboration with CSIRO on the deployment of microsensors on insects can be seen in this video.

Surveillance of tomato potato psyllid in the Eastern States and South Australia (2017)$242,449
Description
This project links to and expand the effectiveness of an existing project PT14001 under the leadership of Calum Wilson. Its focus is to increase the surveillance of PT14001 to be as effective as possible as an early detection for TPP if it crosses from WA into SA and the Eastern states, including Tasmania. This will include the use of sticky traps and supporting industry towards of a scouting program in these states under the management of a dedicated full time coordinator. As well as potato, the project expands PT14001 to include surveillance of other solonaceous vegetables supported by the R&D levy (capsicum, eggplant, chilli), with a focus on those areas of production and with an emphasis for these crops on greenhouses.

microSensing Technologies (2014 - 2016)$269,198
Description
The primary aim of this project is to design and conduct laboratory, glasshouse and field-based entomological experiments intended to assess the efficacy of newly developed micro-sensor technologies produced by CSIRO. The experiments and methodologies will be determined as these newly developed micro-sensors become available from CSIRO. Outcomes will include writing of peer-reviewed scientific papers and technical reporting on the efficacy of micro-sensor adhesion techniques and the newly developed micro-sensors themselves. Presentations at scientific and industry conferences are also anticipated.

Design of communication gateways for micro-sensing devices deployable on insects (2014 - 2016)$109,083
Description
This project will focus on exploring, designing and implementing communication solutions for micro-sensing devices, considering tight energy budgets. The possible communication solutions could include radio-frequency identification (RFIOs), radio in the VHF range, light (laser, LEOs), as well as high-GHz to THz range waves (Mom2011 ), (f\br2003]. To increase the effective communication reach of these devices, mobile receivers will be deployed on aerial robots (drones). Furthermore, the drones could acquire additional data along the insect's flight path, like local temperature, lighting, and (multispectral) imaging data. The key Fundamental Science questions are: (1) How accurately can micro-sensing devices be tracked in the field? (2) Is it possible to efficiently build an ad-hoc network of micro-sensing devices? What are the real benefits of this approach of sensor-sensor communication? (3) How to deal with loss of sensors and/or data gaps over time? Miniaturised electronics has enabled a number of applications such as tracking and tagging to emerge. However, sensing at the sub-mm scale has not been become possible mainly because of energy and communication constraints. The significance of this project lies in: (1) deploying not only a couple, but dozens of RFIDs in a swarm of insects to gain understanding of their behaviour; (2) designing communication solutions for sub-mm sensing devices advancing further than current commercially available alternatives; (3) exploring sensor-sensor communication in a sub-mm sensor network. This research project will deliver unprecedented data on both insect behaviour and on microclimate and, furthermore, on their relationships.

Monitoring psyllids and psyllid predators in Australian potato crops (2014 - 2017)$210,244
Description
Zebra chip caused by presence of the tomato/potato psyllid (TPP) and the bacterium it vectors (Liberibacter)is a devastating disease complex of potato and other Solanaceous crops. Whilst not currently present in Australia, its discovery in New Zealand and subsequent spread throughout that country with associated major losses has prompted significant industry concerns. Proactive studies have been demanded to establish a psyllid monitoring program that will enable early detection of TPP incursions, and to gain a wider understanding of native psyllids and their predators that may assist in sustainable management of the pest should it arrive in Australia. This project will maintain a psyllid and psyllid predator trapping program across major production areas of eastern Australia and will produce and disseminate industry relevant information to assist in recognition of the pest and the damage it causes. Advice will be provided on action to be taken if suspect symptoms are seen and updates on trapping programs outcomes given.

Description
Project aims to examine the diversity and similarity of these chemicals, and the way that they are used, within and between different ladybird species, lifecycle stages, and geographic origins. Our results will shed light on evolutionary mechanisms behind seemingly altruistic ladybird traits and the chemical nature of cues used for communication in complex habitats. This may also identify exploitable chemical/response combinations with potential industry application.
