Expertise

  • User-centred design of agricultural applications integrating data, information and knowledge
  • Decision support in plant disease management
  • Landscape scale experimentation for on-farm trials
  • Walnut production and quality issues
  • Biological control of weedy blackberry: host taxonomy and rust population genetics
  • Epidemiology and management of fruit and foliar diseases (rusts, mildews, blights)

Research Themes

Kathy's research aligns primarily to the University's research theme of Environment, Resources and Sustainability, and, as a participant in the Sense-T Program, to the processes shaping and enabling technology associated with the Data, Knowledge and Decisions theme. She leads the Sense-T Stage 2 Viticulture project to develop a digital tool that gives vineyard managers real-time information about key variables that affect grape and wine production, such as on-farm environmental conditions and disease or frost risks.  Kathy is working with the University's ICT Discipline to enhance this tool so that vineyard managers receive actionable knowledge about their specific vineyard conditions.

A plant pathologist, Kathy has studied the epidemiology and management of various plant diseases, including two important grape diseases worldwide – botrytis bunch rot and powdery mildew. Her research is about understanding the crop, weather and pathogen factors influencing disease development to develop contextually-relevant strategies and tactics for vineyard managers to implement. Kathy has worked closely with the New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research to develop a predidctive model and disease assessment tools to identify the risk of botrytis bunch rot, and with the University of Adelaide to develop objective measures of powdery mildew. On-farm trials and participatory research involving the next users of the research outputs is undertaken to ensure wanted, usable solutions and eventual uptake of new products and/or production practices.

Collaboration

  • 2015-2016: Cornell University, USA; Sour rots of wine grapes (US PhD student)
  • 2012-2015: CSIRO and Sense-T Program; Better risk management for grape growers
  • 2012-2015: University of Adelaide; Objective measures of powdery mildew (national project)
  • 2012-2014: Australian Walnut Industry Association; Quality parameters for Australian walnuts (national project)
  • 2006-2009: The New Zealand Institute for Plant and Food Research and Department of Primary Industries, Victoria; Effective management of botrytis bunch rot in wine grapes. (trans-Tasman project)

Prior to these collaborations, Kathy worked closely with the CSIRO staff in Montpellier, France, and Canberra, during the characterization and selection of exotic rust strains for the biological control of weedy blackberry, including a key note presentation to the International Organisation for Biological Control in France. This work also included collaborative research and joint publications with Oregon State University, US Department of Agriculture, the University of California (Davis), and retired researchers in Germany and the UK.

  • 1991: Du Pont Graduate Student Award, outstanding Master of Science student, Purdue University, Indiana, USA

Current projects

Kathy is involved with the Sense-T Stage 2 Viticulture Project: Supporting Sustainable Expansion of the Tasmanian Grape and Wine Industry. This project creates a system of 'live knowledge' management that integrates human observations of grape production with sensor-derived intelligence to constantly improve the quality and accuracy of variables predicting crop stages or those associated with grape yield and quality.

She also collaborates with the University of Adelaide, in looking into objective measures of powdery mildew.

Her co-supervision of PhD and MSc research projects cover a range of topics:

  • compost teas for plant disease control in horticulture and for application in Ethiopia
  • tree plantation and tree pathology issues in Vietnam and Indonesia
  • use of unmanned aerial vehicles to examine association of hyperspectral imagery of vineyard patches with grape yield and quality variables (in association with the Terraluma research group)

Fields of Research

  • Plant Pathology (060704)
  • Horticultural Crop Protection (Pests, Diseases and Weeds) (070603)
  • Oenology and Viticulture (070604)

Research Objectives

  • Wine Grapes (820306)
  • Control of Pests, Diseases and Exotic Species (960499)
  • Horticultural Crops (820299)

Publications

Kathy's five career best publications are based the research quality and how other researchers have used the new knowledge. These include methods that have helped many research groups study the grape powdery mildew fungus more efficiently. Another has been cited as an example of the seminal literature on the interaction between surface moisture and temperature on the infection efficiency of foliar fungal pathogens. The systematics paper on the genus Rubus demonstrates the coordination a multi-disciplinary team to tackle a complex taxonomic treatment. Resources from this work were subsequently used to study the origins of invasive Rubus in the Western United States. The two refereed publications involving the blackberry rust fungus (and at least 10 more) all contributed to the theory and practice of weed biological, as evidenced by the co-authored 'critical issues' review by Morin, Evans and Sheppard (2006). This fundamental research also informed a report to Biosecurity Australia (Morin and Evans, 2003) to secure the release of exotic rust strains in the Australian environment.

The translation of knowledge from research publications and knowledge exchanges at industry forums have resulted in unsolicited feedback from enterprises noting their improved capacity to take specific and better-informed actions.

Grants & Funding

Kathy's grant funding has been enabled by networks and relationships developed locally and nationally.  For example, an ARC-industry linkage grant, supported by a Tasmanian vineyard and a local compost producer,  contributed science-based information behind the 'muck and mystery' surrounding compost teas for crop protection.

Funding from national bodies for viticultural research in Tasmania depends not only on developing projects of national significance but also on justifying why funds should be spent in Tasmania when grape production is less than 1% of the national total. The trans-Tasman project (Tas, Vic, NZ) for botrytis disease management was awarded because TIA (Evans) coordinated researchers across Australia and New Zealand to prioritise R&D issues before providing industry with a new R&D avenue to address a long-standing issue.

The learnings from the trans-Tasman project about farmer decision-support led to active involvement in identifying potential practical projects for the emerging Sense-T Program. This Program is expected to provide the required infrastructure for the many decision support systems required by the farming sector.  After successful completion of the Sense-T stage 1 viticulture project, the Australian Government's Tasmanian Jobs and Growth Plan is now contributing to a $900,000 stage 2 collaboration led by Evans and the University's ICT discipline.

Sense-T Stage 2: Viticulture (2015 - 2016)$517,313
Description
This project creates a system of live knowledge management that integrates human observations of grape production with sensor-derived intelligence to constantly improve the quality and accuracy of variables predicting crop stages or those associated with grape yield and quality. The system will support better decision making by vineyard managers and winemakers about crop interventions and winery logistics. Not only will this tool strengthen the functionality of the Sense-T Stage 1 viticulture app, it will also facilitate users to collaborate and share data and knowledge for constructive advantage and entrepreneurship. This value-adding will promote technology adoption and sustainable expansion of the Tasmanian wine and grape industry.

Thermal infrared image sensing from Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for precision viticulture (2014)$6,000
Description
This project will initiate development and application of a new tool for remote infrared imaging that will help make precision viticulture more accessible, attractive and easier to adopt. A thermal infrared imaging sensor (FLIR Photon 320) deployed on Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS, also known as UAVs or drones) will be used to capture raw data and produce a high-resolution map of absolute crop temperatures for a vineyard block at specific times of the day and/or critical stages during the growing season. The various steps in this workflow have previously been identified, including sensor lens and radiometric calibration, and in-situ data collection at the time of thermal image acquisition. The maps produced will be calibrated and validated with field observations.
